1. Release parking brake.

2. Make certain to have full air pressure on the bus.
Press service brake pedal to the floor for three
seconds. Do it in this order in case the brake
system is old enough to cause parking and service
brakes to add on top of each other.

3. Release the brake pedal and "bump" the bus with
the clutch. If the bus rolls the brakes are
released. If it does not roll the brakes are
still applied. Try the three second application
again and make certain that you have full air
pressure on the system.

4. One possibility of a cause of sticking brakes
is a roller that rides on the S cam being out
of round. If it is on the flat spot and won't
roll, then the brakes can lock up. I
experienced this one myself on a tag axle of
a model 102?3 MCI. It gets really messy when
that there tag don't roll! Learned from it
though.

You could also have an instance where the parking brake releases, but does not release all the way. Last fall when I brought the bus back from the tire shop, I released the brake and shifted to drive. The bus started to roll and everything felt normal. When I got home, the pax side drive wheel brake was smoking and the wheel was very hot.

When I noticed that, I applied the parking brake, then released it as descibed in the previous post. Again, everything felt normal. I had someone press on the brake pedal while I looked at the brake arms through the hand holes and all looked normal. I have not driven the bus since, other than short little trips around the block to turn it around.

So...How can you tell if the brakes are just dragging slightly. I don't know what kind of damage a dragging brake can cause. I'll now have to pull the rear wheels and inspect the brakes before I drive the bus....so I guess we'll find out.
