I get a wobble/vibration between 65-70mph that I originally thought was something lose in the front end. I have had the front radius rod bushings replaced, new front airbags, slack taken out of powersteering. I was thinking it might be a front wheel/hub/brake drum out of balance, but after driving this weekend the whole front of the bus seems to shake, but I dont feel much in the steering wheel. Could this be something in the rear vibrating and transferring thru the Bus?. I also just had new motor mounts installed. Thanks for your input. Mike McCarthy 1969 GMC4903 Forestville CT |

There are shops that will balance the tires while ON the coach. If you have a poor or cheapo brake drum that is far out , it can help. Bent wheels wobble at every speed. FAST FRED |

tire out of ballance......or tire out of true. ballancing only does so much get them trued. |

very few tires are round......alot of the problem can be corrected with wheel ballance.....but a good truing will add to the benefits of ballance My dad put all brand new tires on his 08 rode nice.....with centrimatic ballances all around. got all 6 trued: rides smooth as a caddy |

Have someone get beside you, (while it is wobbling) on one side, then the other, and observe the wheels to eliminate or to pinpopint the problem. Later, Ed |

Several good suggestions, Mike, I'll add a few more: ~ Possibly bad "dog bone" or radius rod bushings on the rear axle. ~ Possibly U-joint on driveshaft beginning to fail. ~ Remote possibility of bad motor mount. ~ Bent wheel & out-of-round tire - check RF first. ~ Possibly king pins worn beyond specs. ~ Possibly too much slop in splines on prop shaft to steering gearbox from box under driver. ~ Possibly out-of-round brake drum catching brake shoe every revolution. (Easily checked - is there a slight pulsation in the brake pedal on a very light brake application??) ~ Here's the odd one: Check the front ride height. If the leveling valve's set too high, front suspension won't flex properly causing a shaking, but only at certain speeds. Quick check - with coach sitting level, it should be 15.5" from the top of the first step to the ground. HTH, RJ PD4106-2784 Fresno CA |

Now this may sound strange but we found thatsome times if we put on a new tire and aired it up in the tire cage it would act like an out of round tire because the tire would drop on the wheel giving the bounce of an out of roundtire. We would lay then on the floor air it up a woopy no bounce. |

AND...... something else, do you have bias or radial tires ??? If you have bias & it sits more than a month,ya' get a flat spot on the bottom...if this problem "clears up" after 20 miles & runs smooth...that's your problem |

You may not like this, but the floor in the 4903 is a major structural part of the bus and if it is rotten around where it attaches to the floor support members, it can cause the entire bus to vibrate, wobble, shake, not stay in lane, etc. You'd have to ask Luke about possible remedies in an already built coach. Otherwise you may end up having to rip everything out and replace the floor. Let's hope it's something as simple as kingpins or tie rods, but if the front end components are tight, it's starting to look like a foundation problem. |
