My Eagle 20 is gear bound at 72MPH, and I wondered if anyone has changed their rear end gears, and what kind of cost I could expect to pay. My goal is not to drive the coach 80MPH, but rather, I would like to achieve a speed of 75MPH without having to run the engine at 2100RPM. Any thoughts are welcome.

go to a taller tire,1" taller should be all you need for 3 miles an hour.

changeing the gear ratio....1000.00 to 3000.00 tire idea sounds good ,only have to change rear tires

I don't think changing the tire size will do the job. Besides, I'm running 24.5inch. I don't think I can go any bigger.

I have been quoted $1800 for the gear set and carrier to change my Rockwell ratio from 3.91 to 2.80. Bearing in mind that these prices are just for the new components and no labor is allowed for.

I have seen used 2.90 drop outs for anything from $600 and up.

A great source of information is found on a site for vibration control:

Then click on the "1997-2003 HELP FILE" button. Under the "Reference" section there are hundreds of transmissions, axles, etc listed and although they state 1997 and on, you will find that if the axle you have is still current, like my 1994 Rockwell is, then the model number is still shown.

Interesting website to look at anyway. Hope this helps.

Peter's quote is fair, but I looked around and found 2-3 places that would do a "pumpkin" rebuild with taller gears for about $1000, and another $500 to do the install. I ended up sticking an overdrive tranny in instead.. works jes' fine

Having an Eagle with a drop box kind of puts a dent in your plans. The fastest gearset available was a 3.36 and they are a bit expensive and hard to come buy-not to mention the entra cost of installing them.

An overdrive trans might do, but it might require a gear change in the opposite direction. No cheap and easy ways that I know of to accomplish your goal. Good luck, Hal

My 1984 Eagle 10S has a Rockwell 3.33 rear so they are out there somewhere. I have not had it on extreme mountains yet so I do not know how it will pull, but it will go fast on the flats! With the Allison 4 speed, I drive in 3rd on two lane 55MPH roads to keep the RPMs up.

BTW, if you think you have problems with your high ratio rear end, try mine... 5:29 !!! Thank heavens for overdrives!!! When I first got the bus, 61mph was the absolute max at 2500 RPM!! Ugh.... Well, now 85 is my top and that's plenty fast enough.....
