I have a 4104 with a 671 DD engine. I have been having accelerator cable problems as well as low power for awhile. In tracing the cable, I discovered that I have no mufflers. Just these 2.5 inch pipes that go straight down and end in burnt out Cherry Bombs. The Detroit dealer said I should have 4" pipes.
I was a car mechanic for many years and I know how important back pressure is. I am not sure what kind of mufflers to get and do I need to replace the 2.3 inch pipe with 4"? Any ideas?

Do you have a pair of exhaust manifolds or one for all six cyl.

if you have two will will need two mufflers and two exhaust pipes.

I don't have my bus in front of me but they are not 4" pipes. 2.5 to 3"

Hey Guys
In 2 or four stroke engines "back Pressure" is an enemy. IN four strokes there is a think called valve overlap where the intake and exhaust valves are open for a small duration of time to accomplish what is know as "scavenging". The outgoing charge actually pulls the incoming charge into the cylendar and then is compressed and fired and then the cycle starts over again. So, the less back pressure you have the better a two or four stroke will run. Therefor you want to make sure you use an exhaust that provides for as little back pressure as possible. The less the better.
