Hi All. I have been reading this board for some time but have never posted so forgive me if I do something wrong. We recently bought our first bus. A 1984 MCI. The conversion process had already been started.... and stopped. So we are undoing a lot of stuff as well as doing. Presently we are removing some glue residue from the ceiling (can I say ceiling?) This is a very PAINFUL procedure to say the least! Any great ideas out there to make it less painful? My husband and I are taking turns at operating the hand held belt sander. When his arms are ready to fall off I take over for a while. I was hoping for some magical product out there to get the glue off but that is probably a dream. If you all have any hints let us know! i cleaned the glue and "fur" from the insulation off the ceiling from my mci0 with a small-hand-held electric grinder with a wire brus attachment.... MAKE SURE YOU USE AN AIR MASK AND FULL GOGGLES........you're gonna make a mess, but its quicker... i plan on using the polycyanurate board... in 1" thicknesses... you can bend it to fit....and use double thicknesses for ease of installatiion |

You don't say what the glue is on, (metal, formica, wood?) but it is probably easier to cover it with a new ceiling than remove the old glue. Archives on this board should bring up dozens of ideas for a new ceiling. |

I vote with the second guy...I had 18" tall vinol letters on the outside of the bus, took me three days with a heat gun to get the letters off &three weeks of special "glue remover" & a putty knife to get the glue off that was under the vinol letters.....just put either "door skins or that white plastic they have for bathrooms at home Depot (bumpy lookin' stuff) |

Thanks for all the ideas. The glue we are attempting to remove is on the wood ceiling where the previous owner had glued some foam. The headliner had already been removed when we got the bus. We are going to give the grinder a shot. Then we will probably have to smooth it out with a sander. At least I think we are going to try the grinder and if we don't have a lot of luck with that we may have to put new luan up. Would like to avoid that since the radius could prove to be difficult. We are learning as we go. But it is fun...most of the time! |

A word of caution . Make sure the rpm of your grinder is correct for a wire brush. |

Get yourself a 4 inch angle grinder from Harbor Freight Tools, cost is less than $20. Remove the grinding wheel that comes with it and replace it with a 4 inch cup brush, which will cost around $6. This combination will obliterate any old and hardened adhesive crud that gets in your way. Great for removing rust, too. Remember to wear protective gear when using, both for your face and your hands. |
