Well this is a new one on me. Started up my MC7 this morning started right up no smoke just a purring Detroit. Let it run for a hour got everything up to temp then shut it down.Well this afternoon I got the itch [I am in the early stages of renovation the only thing left in the bus is the drivers seat and the floor]had to take it for a drive[wife wanted a driving lesson] when I started it up it quit right away[very weird]started 2or3 more times and finally did get it to run but pushing smoke like I have never seem. Push down on the throttle and nothing no rpm just dark smoke. Does anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like its bieng starved of air by the emergency shut off that cuts the air off. Thats what my 671 does when its been triped.

My 8/71 has a flap on the blower intake for emergency shut down to prevent run aways,it has a ratchet affair and you just go back and look for a lever device and reset it at the engine. yours may be the same. thats most likely what it is , i was fooling around in the elec comprtment and set it off and it did the same thing so its a good bet it got tripped some how there should be a buttor switch in the drivers area to trip it but has to be reset at the engine, just open the flap and your good to go

There is an air switch next to the throttle that moves a cam. It has a notch that normally is holding the cam open. You can rotate it manually and lock it back in place. Maybe your bus doesn't want your wife to drive...the old girls can get jealous on occasion.

Don't laugh but homes have burned to the ground (well, just the roofs burned off) because rooky firefighters DID NOT know about "the mouse trap"

And pulled the emergency shut down instead of just the regular shut down on the fire engine. Murphy's Law is alive and well. Carry on.

Hey, John. I think we met at the Bus Bash in Louisville. I do know how to reset the "mousetrap" on an 8V-71. I would just have a real hard time putting it into words. I meant no disrespect here, just a little humor (obviously, very little). Never heard it called a mousetrap. Hope all is well with you and your 4104.

Well I got toget into this the emergeny shut down
is a handy thing if by chance your engine does run away But will tell you do not I say do not use it unless there is no other way to shut down .
It will some times suck the seals right out of your Blower This shut down ( mouse trap ) is only for emergenys Hi Luke Paco Xpress

I have never heard the the Emergency engine stop system refered to as a Moustrap ,

that term is usually used for the springs on a clutch GM that make the clutch pedal pressure very light and EZ to use.

"Let it run for a hour got everything up to temp then shut it down."

This is a VERY POOR way to operate ,
the DD engines do NOT like this treatment ,
so however much fun the noise is , forget long idles , get in the bus and DRIVE it !!!

The ideling WILL NOT truly warm up a DD , although it may bring up the water temps.

The light load will cause the engine to slobber (loose the compression ) VERY RAPIDLY .(Compared to the 250,000 , 300,000 miles a well rebuilt DD will run.)

IF the coach is in the conversion process and you are unable to drive it , DD has a procedure for storing an engine for over 30 days.
Not cheap , fairly complex , but lots cheaper & less complex than changing out the engine.

Do it Your WAY,

FAST FRED

Lost in the woods.
It was great to hear that, thats all it was.It is a definate down not knowing what problem you have.
But now you need to find out why it triped? Did you pull the switch? Or was it low oil/water/air/or on my 4104 the emergency door switch can trip it if it does not have good contact.

DA Book Sez to "pickle the engine if in storage for MORE than 30 days.

So I just fire her up & run an hour & a half , about 100 miles if traffic is kind every month.

Remember your not only saving the engine , a run also heats the tranny , rear axle , wheel seals and all the things that move in a coach.

Wouldn't claim a 100 mile run will "save " the break realy valve , reverse solenoid (GM ) , or anything else ,

BUT coaches that are regulary driven warm seem to cost loads less to keep in first class mechanical condition than the "Hangar Queens"!

Works for me!

I would like to add a couple of things to the "list" that FF mentioned. Run the AC for a while and you will re-lube seals that expand with oil. This becomes more important in converted R134 systems. Heater cycled, wipers, most anything you can think of. All benefit froma "run" every month or so.
