In the upper 70's today so I am playing with my Genny Pivot fantasy.
I decided to head in for lunch & thought I'd crank the Bus over & let her run for an hour to tickle the batteries.
I rotated the Master switch to -DAY- & then hit the START button.
The engine lit-off on the 4th revolution
BUT the Starter was still engaged & cranking even though my finger was off the button now!

OK-no panic just rotate the MASTER to OFF I assume....
WRONG!
NOTHING changed,
the engine continued to run, although now it was slowing down in RPM noticeably...

I scrambled for a half inch wrench and headed to the battery box,
unhooked both batteries and everything came to a stop.

Must be the START button I figure,
so I open up the panel & do a quick continuity check,
Button is GOOD....

Final check...
with the MASTER in the OFF position & no finger on the button
I go back & touch the positive cable to the post,
and the engine instantly starts to turn over again.

OK
I'm up a creek and looking for clues.

Odds are I am not the first or only one this has happened to.

Your motor shouldn't be turning over by it's self.It must be Possessed.{:-]> Make sure the blower is back on top then Tighten your motor-mounts to torque. That should fix that problem?

Soooooooo Jack;

Gomer was correct wasn't he. But yet you don't thank him for his advice or tell the rest of us what ended up happening with your stuck solenoid and the hammer trick eh.

Or if you are even ok after climbing under your bus or did you go down through the hole to get to it. What kind of Penguin are you? Maybe a stuck one? Do you need help or just another fish. LOL

Ah, well, you see, the deal is....
The rear of my bus has become he de facto major storage area.
And as such, my "not-so-portable hardware store" inventory of fasteners and such is stored righ above the access hole.
I can only get to it by moving a whole lot of aluminum.
So I took the rest of the afternoon off...!
Tomorrow in the late morning I'll give it a whack with the "wrench of reason" from the outside access to it,
if that fails then I'll pull the Solenoid & take it to Fernando, the neighborhood starter/alternator/golf cart motors specialist...
he calls me "Easy Money" because of all the VOLVO business I send his way.
Even it the whack does work the Solenoid still has to come out & be R&R'ed anyway.....
just hoping here that the whole unit doesn't have to come out!

Frankly...I wasn't sure it had anything to do with the starter,
out of unfamiliarity with the whole set-up AND because
That starter had a COMPLETE rebuild on it less than 100 starts ago by a heavy duty Diesel RB shop.
Then I realized,
just 2 months ago I had a brand new Solenoid go out
after less than a week in another total rebuild on a
........never mind.

If all it is , is a Solenoid....
then it's just a "a band-aid" deal
if it ain't.......

I ain't talking to George
so Chromie....
I'm holding a Bic under a finger for you....
here's your "roasted bird"...!

and
I can't thank someone for something I haven't tried yet
but I can say
I appreciate al of the efforts expended here!
(except for you know who's "contribution")

Man do I wish we had a "festivus" here....
Martinez and I would be the main attractions for
the Airing of Grievances &
Leg/Arm wrestling......

Any DC starter is also a generator if spun.

It would be wise to check all the bulbs as some over voltage could have been produced.

Fred has his motors and generators confused!

We can indeed motor a generator by putting power on the armature terminal, and grounding the frame.

But, a motor won't generate when it is turned, because it doesn't have a field circuit to provide the required excitation.

Look at all the radiator fans that turn while blowing in the wind. If they were generating, they wouldn't turn so fast in a small wind, and they would arc over their switch, because the current doesn't have a place to go...

There are quite a few Corvair characters around the busnut world, know a couple that are Flx folk, even. (That's NOT a dis!!!) Haven't met a busnut Charlie Dye yet, tho. . .

As for your kind offer, sorry, I gave up on Volvos when my P1800ES rusted out from under me. . . at only 175K miles. But that's what I get for buying it from a professor @ UCSC who's back yard was the Pacific Ocean. (Always did want to slap a turbocharger on that tractor motor, tho!)

Jack -

Made the correction, thanks. I suppose synchronizing too many 140s leads to adding that extra "c" to the tool's name! We know all too well 'tis a syn to attempt to sync the carbs w/o one! Now if I could just figure out a way to use it on the MUI injectors! LOL!

BTW, know anyone who'd be interested in a NOS A/C compressor mounting bracket for a 140?

George T -

Isn't the motor/generator, generator/motor thing similar to what's done with EMD & GE locomotives? Kinda sorta?

This is an OPERATING starter , filled with juice at hundreds of ampsand then spun to 500% or more of its normal speed ,not a paper motor.Real motors have residual voltage that paper motors don't have.

Guess all the auto and truck mfg. could have saved a real dollar amount by not having the ACC on the start switch.

The reason the radio , and much else is cut out during a start is to save the auto parts from the over voltage of a stuck starter.

The more I get to know people the better I like my dog
We had for many happy, laugh filled years a basset hound.
She was small for her breed coming in at a dainty 40 lbs. most go up to 65 to 70 lbs
She was less than 12 inches tall at the front shoulder but over 3 feet long.
She didn't have an aggressive bone in her body, except if someone called her a wiener or worse sausage dog.
We had to put her down 2 years ago, I still miss and think of her daily.
So no. No wiener tamales.
As for hanging Jack up by his frozen tongue or even by his ever so precocious fingers.
We will see!

What a nice thought George
We still have our little guy, he is a pom shelty cross. Weighs in at a mighty 7 lbs & looks like Lassie after several trips through a dryer
He is 17 years old now, has no teeth, cataracts and a slight heart murmur but still loves to play and cuddle as much as he can.
We plan to travel a fair amount after we retire and though we have taken the dogs with us from Alaska to Mexico in the bus, it is hard to take them when we fly.
I will not put a dog in a kennel and it is hard to get someone to puppy sit, so likely Randy, our little guy, will be our last dog for some time.

RJ,

You are correct as usual. A generator equipped locomotive, which was everything prior to about 1964, started the diesel by putting battery current back thru the generator, and a start winding in the generator, because the gen by itself wasn't quite strong enough. After they started putting alternators in, it was necessary to come up with a different way to start. So, EMD put two Delco automotive type starters on theirs, GE built a seperate start winding in the end of the alternator, and ALCO installed a Worthington air motor. Now EMD is using air starters, ALCO is long out of business, and GE is using a bigger auxiliary generator as the start motor.

To answer Fred, the traction motors roll freely when the throttle is closed, and don't generate any current, only consume it, when the throttle is in a notch lower than what is needed to mantain speed. Said traction motors don't generate ANY current until the armatures are connected to the brake grids, AND the fields are connected to the generator to excite the armature.

The accessories on a car are disconnected by the ignition switch so they don't drag down the battery while starting. If starters put out high voltage when they were turned, all our buses with a master switch, and a seperate start button, would have had their electronics destroyed years ago.

George M -

Hey, cut me some slack!. I had busnut fever long before Corvairs came into the picture. I used to ride this exact bus when I was a kid - always marveled at the driver steering, shifting and making change at the same time:

Peerless 246

My first car was a '61 Monza Lakewood. I wanted a 4106, but they were all in revenue service at the time, thus slightly out of my budget. The '06 often seen in my neighborhood looked like this:

Peerless 297

So you see, buses have been in my blood long before tossed fan belts.

And face it, George - a Greenbrier DOES look a little like a 4016!

As for Jack. . . it takes awhile for non-Corvair people to understand the affliction. Just as it takes "normal" people time to understand we busnuts.

OT - one of the water bomber/ crop duster pilots at work (don't know what that says) has a '66 Monza that he bought in '68. After owning it for 42 years, it's in beautiful condition and it's never left him walking (can't say that about my TDI Jetta) -- but he does always carry spare belts and tools.

RJ beautiful old coaches, thanks for that.
I think it is easier for non bus folks to get to understand us busnuts. All it takes is one ride in a well converted coach and most of them are hooked.
One ride in a Corvair convinces people that Nader is not a nut!

Hey RJ,
That Old Look looks like it has been changed to power steering and has a bad leak as it backed into it's spot. Plus, I think the fuel tank is leaking!

the 4106 is sharp except for that horrible oil leak that's on the ground all around it. That's the wet look of the road.

Personally, I love Corvairs, they were probably the best VW ever built, except when Subaru came out with the water jacket for their engines in the 60's!

Really, I wish I still had my Corvairs. If St. Helens hadn't let me ruin them, I would probably still be driving one today!
Then again, after that I ought a 65 Chevy Van with a 235 and a cast iron slip'n'slide. I swapped the engine out for a 283 and T350. As Tim Allen said, and I quote, "More Power, Unnh, Unhh, Unhh!"

Bruce -

That was my experience with Corvairs, too - they were actually very dependable. Once you fixed the oil leaks, of course! Especially the second-generation ('65 - '69) models.

Loved how you could have the entire powertrain out of the car/FC in less than 30 minutes if you needed to do serious work on it.

Les -

Glad to share. The new stuff just doesn't have the "industrial workhorse" charm that the older models exude.

George M, Les, Dallas, Bruce, Jack, et al -

Back in the middle '70s, there was a father & son who were fellow members of the SF Bay Area Chapter of the national Corvair club. They had the most beautifully restored '62 Monza Lakewood wagon, along with a spectacular '64 Monza Spyder convertible. Both cars were often winners at various car shows around the area at the time.

Son was in high school. Dad's occupation? Technical Field Services rep for GMC Truck & Coach Division! Yup, the warranty service guy. Knew GM buses inside out, upside down, backwards and forwards. Often told me the 4104 was the best-engineered as well as "overbuilt" bus ever manufactured.

So you see, GM buses and Corvairs can go hand 'n hand!

(Oh, and so does the GMC Motorhome, for that matter, since it was built by GMC Truck & Coach. Shall we throw in the Ultra-Van, too??)

FWIW & HTH. . .

back to your starter, now that you have the battery disconneted take a ohm meter and go across the two small leads on the starter sel. and see what reading you get. it should show a short now go to the 2 heavy leads and you should have an open circuit. if not the contacts of the sel. are fused closed . if you see an open circuit go to the start relay in the rear electical compartment at the rear use the ohm meter to go accross the two heavy leads that are the ones that go to the starter sel. if you see an open then check the heavy lead that goes to the starter sel. and ground you will see a resistanc of the sel. now go acrossthe two leads at the starter and if you see a resistance the the contacts of the relay are fused togrther so replace the relay. also go to your DD dealer or a starter rebuilder and get the 12 point stud bolt that replaces that hard to get at nut at the back of the starter. remove this nut and stud ass. and replace with the new bolt, now you can take it out with a socket as it has a special head .

I still think that a big hammer would work just fine for this occasion LOL Then you would know just where the problem was I agree with Mel too. Just had one that was working porperly and all of a sudden it wouldn't crank. Found a wire burnt somewhere between switch and solenoid. Ran new wire and the problem was solved. Most times it is a simple solution and fixing can be a nightmare LOL

Topic's are for people who either forget or need structure
I'd rather it were just conversation that starts on a common subject.

The Starter project was sidelined on account of real work & someone else's schedule.
Tomorrow I'll chase it.,
Fernando isn't open until 8AM on Monday, so there's no pressure to perform.
While I'm there I think I'll buy a couple of extra pucks for my future & a poor soul down the road's.
It can keep my spare Voltage Regulator & Alternator Diodes company.

Bruce...
TC-TD MGA..
all the same under the external body seams aren't they..?

RE: Corvair's....
I'm more of an air-cooled engine fan than a Corvair one,
not particularly a Chevy fan either
although in 1965 all they produced was gold.

I drive what I can enjoy & maintain & Corvair's have served me well for several decades.

It started out as a way to avoid continuous car payments!

Where have I been...?

On my BACK, allowing L-2 & L-3 time to recover!
Every once in a while I bend over & stay that way for 10 minutes while absorbed in something trivial.....then later that day I will suddenly remember that I can't do that w/o paying a price steeper than I care to pay...tooo late!

The starter Solenoid came out with a little finagling, an experienced person might have suggested that the 4 tiny bolts on the cover of the Solenoid could be removed instead of the entire unit but now I have the experience.
The Copper Puck was welded as was expected....
Fernando took my old Solenoid & $40. and gave me a factory fresh new unit.....the benefit of doing business with the same guy for 30 years!

SO...
Everything is ROSEY down here in the StinkinHot.....
we even had a bit of rain
which helped prepare the ditch for that fire sale hulk
that WhotzHisName will be driving when he heads this way...

QUESTION: Do 4905's float as good as Volkswagen Beetles...?
and for how long....?
I'll be building a dock so that he can get from the door to "shore"
w/o getting his fancy Palm Beach shoes dirty, no handrail tho....
you'll either have to not use it when your "in the bag" or relearn how to walk when you are!

Mel...you are Da Man!
But the whole starter remainded in place fortunately...BUT
I do perform that very stud swap on my Corvair's & have for a long time....it amazes me that a clown like me can figure out that which GM & their expen$ive Engineering staff fail to.

GOMER....

Ask Martinez about whackin a starter with a hammer....
his is missing a big hunk of nose-cone casting where it was whacked previously....now he has an "Air-Cooled" starter...
(the hole in the starter is about the size of the one in his head)

Thanks to all of you that contributed here, the problem was unexpected, a new experience that scared me and a small item in the end.
The one thing that would have saved me some excitement would have been
IF I had installed a pair of battery switches....
the mad scramble to find a wrench to unhook the cables cost time & I'm sure it shortened the life of my Starter.
I bought a half inch socket /ratchet & extension that now reside in the battery box permanently and a pair of switches are on the way.

Keep some excitment in your life and just leave the tools on top of the battery. Luckily we all got the pm about keeping the 4 bolt solonoid cover a secret. something about straight from a horses mouth.

"Marvin you gonna let him call you half a clue,"

That's a deliberate diversion...
Gomer has a lot more on the ball than a clue
it's just when you are thrown into the mix
the sum total is less than it would be if he was alone!

He's steering you down a dark road Gomer...
if I was you I'd be running or hiding.

You weren't in the Courtroom
how can you know that....?

I have this vision of you pulling up to my gate
6 tires flapping shreds
blue smoke trailing for miles behind you
water shooting into the sky
from your rear over-fill spout
and at the moment you arrive
all 8 air bags blow in pyrrhic unison...

You probably won't have any problems the whole way...
the demons in the trees will all be sleeping
I'm sure....
