Hello from Moab, Thanks Fred for the advice on the regulator turn down for the boiling batteries. Made the first drive in the 4106 over the mountains in Utah no problem. But Now... I have a feeling it may always be like this. (This works great but now...) It appears I have a short. The Generator/Alt. works fine and seems to be producing a ton of power. Although she does not want to start. The flashers and such only work when the RPM's are way up on the engine and once off it will not turn over. With in 2 hours of shut-off the drivers fan does not even work. I hooked a charger to the batts and still nothing. So I am thinking someplace in my tear out I left a wire lose or something. It would start on a charger before I started tinkering, but now nothing. So any ideas on a way to isolate this short down from 200 terminals to maybe 100 or even less. I have a few ideas searching for the leaky amps but that would require all the terminals to be removed. What do you all think? Eric in Utah |

Easiest way to find leaky current is to buy a clampon DC ammeter. Just clamp it around the battery cable and start removing suspect terminals until the leak goes away. A quick and dirty (and cheap) way to determine if you actually have a leak is to disconnect one of the battery terminals and then quickly touch and remove the loose cable to the battery post. If you do have a leak, you will get a spark. The size of the spark will be determined by how much leak you have. If it is very small, you might need to wait till nite time to see it. Make sure all lights and any other DC appliances are turned off. Even one small light bulb turned on will produce a spark. From the sounds of your description of your problem though, I strongly suspect you have a bad battery. Richard |
