It sure is a bright full moon and at 11:06 there isn't so much as a dimple anywhere to be seen...yet... . . . . .1:30 AM... The moon is a faint pinkish-red shadow of itself but it's not as spectacular as "artist's conception's" were on the picture machine. |

Hi Jack - 3:48 PM here and the moon has completely disappeared. Just like it's supposed to... but never before saw it actually happen. Pretty cool! Makes me realize how quick we'd all be dead without 'ol man Sol. Must be awfully cold up there right now... Nellie |

"Darkest night in 500 years?" Not sure where you heard that one. No matter how close the moon is or how centered in the umbra, an eclipse in the sky is never, ever going to be as dark a night as a moonless one. Darkest full moon in that long, maybe (but I doubt it). Lots of pseudo-scientific babble on the net due to the eclipse coinciding with the solstice, the first time since 1632. -Sean http://OurOdyssey.BlogSpot.com |

Like Sean says.... The moon turned a deep purplish-blue color here, and the trees were all lit up. Sometimes I sit at night and wonder at the glory of the stuff around us. From the Faerie Circles that mushrooms make to the unfolding wonder of the cosmos. We live in a small corner of one small arm of the galaxy. If we lived anywhere else, life would be somewhat different... although maybe not as exciting. |

Guess we all perceive what's in our hearts and imagination. Some see mystery and eternity, some see science. I pick the former. Nellie (Message edited by vivianellie on December 21, 2010) |

In eastern NC, it was a dusky red at full and pretty much over by 4AM. When it wasn't total, the "lit" part was very bright. Also, the moon was incredibly bright earlier in the night (10-12) -- almost like sunshine. |

Kind of cigarettes nothing. I am wondering what type of mushroom he has been circling First time in 372 years that a lunar eclipse fell on the winter solstice. Thank god the days are going to start to get longer. It was not visible to me last night because I forgot and went to bed. Darn!!! |

Les.... Can we PLEASE just stay on topic here for once!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the subject was BIG MOONS speaking of Big & Moons ( moons, Maroons or Morons...close enough) Dal quit smoking them cigarettes right after he dropped a lit one while giving himself one of those vitamin injections he gives himself frequently. When he comes back from Coney Island after the shot he's fine. . . . Don't worry Les, my dear dear friend... you likely din't miss anything I read the weather reports for your area they said the snow was too deep to see the Moon anyway.... BTW... when you get "Corn Snow" up there do you cook it first or eat it raw...? and where do the Cobs go....? I've always wondered about that... . . . Being a "Southern Boy" and all like that (born 45 miles south of 45 degrees North & on the Mighty Miss awe sippy to boot....GO Rebels!!!!!) I wouldn't have the experience of knowing about such Arctic Phenomena & wild country stuff and while I'm on the subject of Arctic things... Whose this woman Aurora Bory Alice I keep hearin aboot..? Do you know...??? I mean you do strike up conversations with strange wimmin on the Internet Tubes frequently I see... (I mean , Nellie din't come connected to your Mac via USB cord did she now?) (Oh oh... that could have a different meaning for someone with gutter brains.... good thing we are all educated, civilized, adults here... except for FooHorse of course) Just wonderin... .
