Does anyone know if there is such a thing as a 1:04 to 1 set of bevel gears available for a V730? I know the set listed is .875 to 1 but some where I have heard of another set but no idea where. The V730 parts book lists two asssemblies but one is with power take off and the other is not. Any help would be appreciated. Bill

I have heard of the 1:04 gear set but have not seen it i was told the 1:04 is a more powerful set and much slower, in otherwords the engine rpm is higher for a given speed .I do not know if any of this is the real way it is but the one that told me seemed to know what he was talking about

There is, usually used with the 6V71 engine. Your best chance of finding one is in a 40 foot coach with that engine, especially in San Francisco.

The 1.04 final drive for the V730 is found in transit buses usually mated to the 6V71 engine for low power applications. It is not even listed in the V730 service manual under ratios. It is not a desireable ratio if you are using it for highway speeds. The only way to know if a V730 has the .875 or the 1.04 ratio is to have an Allison dealer look at the serial number and check the build sheet on it. Pity the people who have bought used 730's and ended up with 1.04's because they didn't check the numbers...

Thanks Guys
I know I had heard of it but no idea where. I have a spare V730 from a 6V71 but I guess the only way to know what set is in it is to pull it apart. According to the V730 manual the model number on both of my trannies indicates a .875 to 1 ratio. The only difference is the multiplication factor of the torque convertor. One is the TC470 and the other is the TC490. Thanks again for your help. Bill

I wish I were rich enough to offer a large prize
to prove once and for all that there is not and never was a 1.04 bevel gear set in a V730. I've talked to two technicians at Allison, three Allison distributors and four rebuilders of the V730 and asked all about this gear set. NONE has ever seen or heard of the alledged 1.04 bevel gears. Only Gary Dean insists there was such but he can't produce one. I want one if someone has one.

Jerry

The first time I heard of the 1.04 third gear ratio in a V730 was from David Hartley. He had one and warned everyone to check serial numbers on V730's with Allison dealers to see what the final drive was. Since that time we I have seen several posts from people who installed the 1.04's in their buses only to discover they had the underdrive ratio. I don't think anybody is making this up. You might check with David Hartley, he used to have a bus related web site and bulletin board but this is the only link I could find today:

http://www.rvbus.net/

Now-- David HAD a 1.04 V730. Maybe he still has it for sale.

The urban Legend of a 1.04/1 V730 dies hard! One 4108 owner near Portland Oregon sold what he thought(incorrectly) was an under drive. He replaced it with what he thought, based on a list of assembly numbers that confused PTO with underdrive, was on overdrive only to find no change in top speeds. He isn't bragging about his futile change.
I want an underdrive V730, show me the BEEF.

Jerry -

Curious as to why you want the "mysterious" under-driven V-730. . .

Why I want an underdrive V730.
There are plans, available from Bill Teal, to use the gears from a VS2 in front of a V730 to create a selectable overdrive. One can use the gearsets from the VS2-6 or VS2-8 with Bill's plans. If one had the underdrive V730 and used the VS2-8 gears the high gear would be the same as the VS2-8 and the lower speeds of the V730 would give better ratios for hill climbing etc. With a little work beyond what Bill did a true 4 speed automatic could be had in a V drive highway coach.

Yup, I think I must have one of those rare birds.
No not an Eagle! Judging by my top speed in my 04 I think the v730 IS underdrive. I will check the number plate, post it & email you, Jerry.

FYI, 6v92t. Top speed: 70-72 @ 2350 rpm. 4-1/8 rear end ratio. 11r22.5 tires. 60mph=2000rpm.

I just installed a cruise control as low ratio & good power had tendency to want to run top speed if not paying attention.

RJ, I think I got used to this speed as you inclined me. I like to travel two laners, mountains & eventually may pull a big trailer, so 65 is a good speed. 55mph is the speed limit in CA if towing anyway.

I was just used to or spoile by the fact my MC5 RV conversion runs an easy 80. BTW, I think it may be time to sell a nice MC5 if you know anyone looking. Joe

Joe,

Is it possible that you have a rear end from a 4905, either 4.375/1 or 4.4/1 and an overdrive V730. Your bus goes a bit too fast to be an underdrive with a 4 1/8 axel (I figure 55@2000). I'm looking forward to checking your tranny's data with Allison. If you do have one then there is at least some hope of finding another.

Jerry

Joe,

So far no one has adapted the Teal overdrive to a 6V92ta. But it should not be terribly difficult.
If you had the VS2-8 version you could cruise at 87mph @ 2000rpm in overdrive leaving the MC5 in the dust.

At 87 MPH in a 30,000lb. bus it takes almost a 1/4 mile to stop! Ponder the implicatios for a moment. :( ...JJ

You will definatly get rear ended by a 80,000lb truck stopping from the same speed.

I agree that 87 MPH Is 2 fast but If It takes you that far to stop then Maybe you need to do something with your Brakes. It certinly should not take that long to stop.

I think JJ is probably spot on.

I have had a couple of 60MPH panic stops in my 30' 83 BlueBird.

As I build this coach, I will be very conscious that everything not strapped down is a potential projectile.

Hi Jerry,

Yes my rear end ratio is definately 4-1/8. It is a 4106 unit i installed in the 4104 w/730 trans so the driveshaft aligns properly.(after we flipped the rear end over) Before this I had bad vibration problem. Now no more bad vibes!
Intriguing it is to consider the Teal adaption to the 6v92 but I don't want to be the first. But would install it in a year or two if had the info & help. BTW boys, I think we're talking speed potential here, not that we would ever use it!!
(Well maybe going across Nebraska on I80!)
Jerry, will get you the numbers on the build plate this weekend as my bus is in Havasu.
Later, Joe

Hi Jerry,

Give a old time bus trader/mechanic associate of mine a call. No computer guy. Phil Humbert in Minnesota. Works on my bus when I am there, etc.
Has two 4905s available that you may consider in place of the local 4107 we are talking about getting going again.
Mostly he can tell you about the 730 trans setup & will tell you this VS2 overdrive idea is stupid. Should be intersting, let me know. Definately worth a phone call to Phil @ 952-657-2140 in Mayer, MN. Regards, Joe

The 730's came in two ratios, just like the vs series,, which is actually mentioned in the vs repair manuals. The allison v730 parts manual lists the part numbers for the trans. assys. that had the 1:04 ratio's. I can give you the part numbers if you like. Mine came out of a v-6 71 short transit flexible. I'm going to make an overdrive for my 4905 with it.The trans. assy part number is stamped on the tag on the case.

The early Allison sales brochure lists both transmission ratios. However by the late 80s only the .875 is listed. When checking into this issue about 5 years ago I found all the part numbers but understand the 1.04 gearset is no longer available.

John, the VS series came in at least FOUR ratios, two in the VS2=6 and two more in the VS2=8.
Personally I love the idea of modifying the 730 that way, do some people here have first hand knowledge of it not working out?

I was just talking about the bevel ratios, not the planetary ratios which are approx .77 and .69, which when multiplied by the bevel ratio, gives 3 or 4 different overall ratios.(.80,.60,.67, and.72.They don't list the.67, although you could build this setup.
