OK, my shower has to drain UP to the tank. The plan was fairly straightforward: a pump & check valve...but then I spent 2 hours snaking out my bathtub due to my wife washing her (floor-length) hair. Something tells me this would do evil things to a pump.

So, any ideas? Either another way to do the shower, or a hair-proof pump?

Again--A boat answer.

they make a sump-tank that the shower drains into, with a little bilge-pump that pumps the water out.

the sump-tank has a screen that catches the hair ans stuff. A messy job, we have to clean it about twice a year, there's four of us living on the boat.

To add to Gary's answer, I am using a "single port shower drain kit" made by "rule" that is a 12v marine shower sump pump with the removable cover and filter. Works great in my RTS.

P.S. Don't you have a screen on the tub drain? They usually work pretty good at catching hair.

Uhh, Eagle, I want to have a bus CONVERSION, not a need for a wheelchair-accessable bus. :) She's had at least waist-length hair since (ready for this?) age 10. I've never seen her with less than ankle-length hair.

Thanks, Gary...I'll look into that.

Yeah, but you busted up laughing didn't you?

My side still hurts.

On the other hand, My wife didn't see the humor.

Not really...her hair is the one thing she is VERY particular about. Clothes, makeup (never wears any), what's "in style", she doesn't care. BUT, she's rather particular (to put it mildly) about her hair.

Amazingly, she can pin it up in ~30 seconds, without a mirror. I'm not sure I could do it in 30 MINUTES.

A piece of coarse wire wool loosley stuffed into the drain will catch hair quite successfully. Can be thrown away once a week or whenever it gets blocked. Stainless would be better as it won't rust so quickly.

Now THAT'S a good idea!

Might reduce the monthly pipesnake at home, too.

Mental note: hit Home Depot for coarse stainless wire woll tomorrow.

Continuing with that thought, perhaps a plastic or stainless steel pan scourer would be better as its coarser than the wire wool.

Johnny, I gotta see a pic of your wife! My wife has hair (thick) down to her butt and on the way to her ankles in a few years (it grows FAST) so I know what you're talkin about.

Forget the shower drain problem,,, I want a cd of your wife playing the harp. I envy your evenings at home with her practicing her harp music. CaSteve

OK, Let's get real...
If you have a beautiful wife with longer-than-ass-length hair...What do you do at home???
Do you have a macerator pump in your home plumbing? I don't think so.
When my wife had hair so long that it was a problem for the plumbing, we took a plastic coffee can lid and punched some holes in it, put it over the drain and she took the shed hair out of the shower with her.
It ain't an engineering problem, it's a user problem!

You should hear Gary's music. Not only a talented bus builder, but a composer and musician as well!

Find a bilge pump with a single diaphram ,

there not choked by golf balls or a mans belt when pumping.(2 inch size)

Look at the one from EDISON marine , and try for a smaller cheaper unit.

Voodoo Lounge: I've been snaking out the $%^&*( bathtub every few weeks...hardly the ideal solution.

And that's WITH a screen on the drain.

Shower caps are a great help. I required one be worn by any long haired female whom wished to shower in my sailboat, which had a shower sump w/pump. Hair shampooing was done in the sink or better yet, the marina shower room when at port. The shower floor was a 24" square teak grate with a sump below. Access to clean out soap scum, hair, etc. or pump maint. merely involved lifting out the grate.

eagle, I don't think that would fly.

Rodger: She usually does wear a cap to shower, but her hair (literally) won't fit in the sink.

Also, I can snake the tub more easily than the sink. I sorta accept it as a fact of life living with someone with 6 feet of hair.

Shower drain filter: I use fabric window screen cut in circular pattern same size as drain cover. Remove drain cover and place screen in position on the back of the cover. Trim to fit. Snap back into position and you are set. It catches everything and requires easy periodic cleaning.

Take it from someone with shoulder length hair, I use half inch thick scotchbrite cut into a circle to fit the drain. It doesn't catch every little speck, only the hair as it's quite coarse. It also doesn't impede the flow of water.

To remove, fish it out with a toothpick, toss in the trash, and replace with another piece. If you are stingey, you could clean the old piece and re-use it, I suppose. I never do as I get it from a local aerospace surplus outfit for $1 a pound.

Actually, someone on another (non-bus) board just suggested a piece of stainless-steel woll in the drain...which sounds like a good idea.

That wouldn't hurt the pump (extra restriction), would it?

Can't see how it would affect the pump as long as it was kept clean and/or replaced regularly.

Wonder if he read my idea here and repeated it......... LOL.
