I have my 6-71 out of bus and all torn down. It getting a big fresh up ... When removed it had dual exhaust on it ... 2 exhaust manifolds and 2 mufflers and pipes. The manifolds are broke about 5 times and one muffler has some small holds in it and we want talk about the pipes LOL. I was thinking of going back with one manifold for all 6 and one muffler and pipe. Can anyone give me any ideas if Im going in the right direction or where to find parts for this ??? Where the muffler attaches to the manifold it is like a donut with a clamp, also do you have to fab up your own pipe or pipes or can you buy them somewhere ??? Any help I will sure take.
Thanks
Steve (The new guy and still having fun)

PD4102 - PD4103 had a single manifold and a single muffler.
Mostly the same setup as the younger and less well engineered PD4104.

4104s had both single and dual mufflers, both are shown/described in the Maint Manual and Parts Manual.

Duals are easier to work with and get out of that small hole above them inside the bus. I don't see how you could ever get a larger single muffler out without removing the engine - which is probably what the bus companies did!

I made smaller mufflers from two I bought from JCW which are better mufflers than the originals. As you can see the top muffler flanges are designed to trap moisture and rust out, then the top holes become blow torches aimed at the rear bedroom!!

I can send you my drawings by email for the mufflers with all part numbers necessary for the conversion if you like.

Steve you might want to rethink about going to one manifold. they have a bad history for cracking that is why GM went to the 2 manifold system and as stated they are sure a lot easier to replace than than that 3 1/2ft single. if i am not mistaken the 2 singles are the same as those that they use on the V6/71

Steve -

I whole-heartedly agree with Don - since you've got it apart, rebuild it with a turbo! You won't believe the difference, seriously.

With the right combination, it will give you around 300 hp and a whole bunch more torque, making the coach even more enjoyable to drive.

The bottom end of the inline six is more robust than the V-blocks, to it can easily handle the added output.

Go for it!!

FWIW & HTH. . .

:-)

PS: If Mel's right (that the V6-71s exhaust manifolds will work on your inline - Don should know), then I know of an engine that the owner may be interested in selling you the manifolds. You can contact me by clicking on my name to the left.

While you're at it Gus, I'd love to see that info as well. To much is not enough when dealing with these, eh?

Thanks Gus...

Gus was the one that gave me the info on the mufflers and flanges.

I ordered the mufflers from JCW. Then went down to NAPA and ordered the 2 flanges, 4 of the 90deg elbows, and a 10ft piece of pipe. (all 3" diameter)

I now have 3" dual exhaust all the way from manifold to exit under the rear bumper.

Got it Gus, and replied by email. Thank you...

I'd like to hollow out a set of fishtails I still have kicking around from my Harley ShovelHead. Dual fishtails sticking out the back of an '04 would be pretty cool, eh? Might have to go with 4 or 6 of them though to get the proper flow.

Hmmmm....

Turbocharge the 6-71, and you go from 210hp and 600lb/ft torque to 300hp and 900lb/ft torque. 50% more torque does wonders for getting up a hill. Plus you could easily install an air to air intercooler in the transmission side door. Good Luck, TomC
