Hello again! Still searching and would love to hear if anyone hazs insight on the older Newells...mid-1970's. I have pretty much been looking at MCI and GMC - wanting the 35ft'ers, and typically Bluebird and Newells have not been close to what I wantin my price range. (If they are in my price range, they are pretty well destroyed...)

Regardless, if anyone knows about these older Newells, please advise. I am curious about how well they will hold up. I know they are well built, but are they as "beefy" as the buses I have been looking at? Can I anticipate another 15 years from them if they are curretnly in good shape? Lastly, if there is some electrolysis (think that is what it is called with the corrosion and aluminum skin) on the skin, can that be fixed?

Thanks,
Matt

Matt, where are you located? I saw a nice GM 4108 for sale in Henderson, NV ('Vegas) yesterday. That is a 35 ft. version of the 4905 Buffalo. Interested? I'll get the phone number for you. Cheers...JJ

JJ,
I am in San Diego...I looked at a 1976 Newell today...looked real good with a 6v92 with a 654 Allison with 30k, recent carpet and interior...not 100% the color I would choose...but that is the price of buying used. The rig had minimal surface rust on the frame, actually 170K on the rig...I have made an offer - and will see if they accept in the morning. If anyone has anything to say about the older Newells...please let me know. Otherwise, I think I am going to actually commit on this one....

Matt -

Are you interested in a GM 4106?

There's one in Madera, just up the road from me here in Fresno, that's available.

Email me for more info if you are - just click on my name above.

Matt, no one is really replying to your question regarding Newell reputation. I don't know alot about them, but the things that I've heard from others was good. Apparently they are ver particular with they details and build a good quality product. How it compares to commercial coaches, I don't know. If we're talking mid 70's models here, I would put it on the same level as the Wanderlodge of simular years.

Thanks Darryl. That was pretty much what I have arrived at - but was looking for any and all inputs. Since Newell makes so few coaches, finding info on them is difficult...few folks I have spoken to love the Newell...but I have not met any9one with one this old.

I drove it today - first time behind a 38ft vehicle. Certainly not a car - but had all sorts of power, and steered with relative ease. As wqe rambled down the road, I tended to over correct every action...just inexperience, but made the journey a little intimidating...now I just have to decide on this unit - or continue my hunt...
Thanks again,
Matt

We had a 4106 and now own a Newell. Actually my wife bought the Newell and I had to sell my bus. Oh well at least piece in the family.

My favorite quote about a Newell was "If I ever have to hit a brick wall, let it be in a Newell.

All Newell built since 1970 are really built the same way. For more information on this you can check out www.newellcoach.com for the history of the company

Gary,
Your posting made me chuckle. Thanks for the advice - I actually put an offer down and after a bit back and forth, I am now the proud (still nervous but grinning) owner of a 1976 Newell. I did make the sale contingent on an engine oil analysis. As I posted in anopther post - he accepted without a second thought. In fact, his point was, "figure what you want to do - I am not in a hurry." I tell you, it makesa the buying process really nice when the owner is willing to accomidate, take the time to show you everything, fix the couple bits and pieces and wait on an analysis. I know I feel good - and he appears happy as well...so I guess it was meant to happen.
Thanks again for all the advise - I am sure I will be back here asking "owner" questions...will I still be welcome even though it is a Newell and not a conversion? >:-) I sure hope so...
Cheers,
Matt
