Just got back from a cruise to Alaska. Quick Shuttle of Vancouver is running MC8s that they have converteded to series 50 engines with 7 (seven) speed manual transmissions. Previously they ran same MC8s with series 60 engines with a 5 speed manual. They prefer manual transmissions.

So for you guys wanting to upgrade to 4 cycle DDs in the future, it has been done and works great. 78 mph top speed. 75 with AC on.

I heard somewhere you could make a silk purse from a sow's ear, too! ::::grin::: I know the 60 and 50 series DD will go in an MCI coach, the question is how much work will it take? Do you need to lengthen the coach? Will it need larger radiators? A single radiator? Will it fit on the old engine cradle?
What kind of bottom line dollars will it take to have this done? To do it yourself?

As far as I am aware, you can get the 60 in an MCI, but can't use an automatic tranny. Similar to the MC-5 only having an 8v71 with a stick or a 6v71 with an auto.

I thought there was a height problem too, which had the motor sticking thru under the bed plinth. Don't know how they do it in a seated bus, unless there is room in a MC-9.

Series 50s are a touch on the vibratory side.

Another point to ponder is that although the top speed is quoted at 78 mph, that would probably be at max rpms (2100) and 4 stroke diesels don't like being cruised at max. They much prefer to cruise at 1450 t0 1600 rpms.

Best thing to do with any big power upgrade on an MCI 8 or 9, is to install a single large side radiator and drive a fan from the crank pulley using a miter box, such as the one that used to drive the squirrel cage fans.

You can then incorporate all that area where the header tanks and fans were, into the interior.

Why use a miter box for the fan? Just use a hydraulic motor. Less hassle.

You already have the miterbox and hydraulics would have to be bought.

Electric fans are nowhere near powerful enough to cool that sized motor.

Mostly Electric fans are not used cause 20-hp to 30hp electric morors are HUGE!heavy & hard to power.

IT'S C.F.M....... NOT H.P.that cools an engine, I still say elec. fans will work...got plenty of elec. the alt. is as big as your head

Quick shuttle has done a fleet of 4 cycle conversions. When one of you is really serious about such a conversion, and willing to spend some serious money, I suggest you talk to their service department and maybe fly to Seattle, take the Quickshuttle to Vancouver and look at their MC8 engine conversions. I will not bother a mechanic trying to keep a fleet of charter buses on the road with idle dreams. I don't have an MCI. My information came from the driver who has been with them for around 20 years. I expect that the 7 speed transmission and has an overdrive to allow for the lower RPM preference of the DD Series 50.

series 50 is a common and easy swap for MCI's like 6v92 for gmc..lots of series 50's around..just buy one and put it in all the ddec motors are easy to wire in just buy the trouble shooting manual...nothing to swapping motors just something people are scared of and so shops can stick it to you...do it your self...nothing to it

say that ANY mechanic who can "keep a fleet of charter buses on the road with idle dreams." Is my HERO... (and I wouldn't want to bother him either)! :::grin:::

National Bus Lines out of Calgary Alberta is putting series 50 engines in MCI 8 and 9 coaches using a stock engine cradle from MCI. Apparently a run of late 9s had that engine from the factory. Now if I could find someone who could sort out the electronics on my Cat/Allison with GMC truck gauges and controls!!
