I am shopping for a bus and am thinking about purchasing a 4106. How hard is it to find parts for them if I breakdown on the road? Is there anything I should beware of? Any advice? |

Buffalo's are
nice looking buses....just check REAL good for rust & find out where it spent it's life ,not in the northeast I hope.. |

A 4106 is not a buffalo, it is a straight 35 ft, just look for rust and look under the back at the bulhead for cracks, also look up in the wheel wells in the rear for missing fasterners, and the floor needs to be in good shape look at all that for problems

Parts should not be any more of a problem than any other 'bus'. You may not find the part in TIMBUCKTOO, Alaska, but all it takes is a phone call and over-night service.
Parts for the GMC 8V71 series engine are still stocked by many dealers nation-wide.

the myth about lack of parts comes from those who don't know where to look
as far as I know this is what is not available new for my 04
rear glass, driver and door OEM window rubber and the thermostat housing and new skin
mechanically just about everything is available new or rebuilt |

Tom, true the link you provided will give me some new skin......however it isn't OEM Style. The 04 had rolled fluting where the new stuff is bent. |

FF, I can make you a trade or partial trade as I have some of the latch hardware for the split pane windows.

look at the post right above this..If it "looks" like some shadetree has been maintaining it or looks like it's been "patched-up"..wires hanging ,etc., painted with a brush.(caution)......let the owner drive it first,watch him shift it,buses got to be double clutched,if he has trouble driveing it ,or shifting it,you will also..back off 50 feet,look down the sides,like you would look down a pool cue,is the bus "warped"...check front tires for wear pattern,inside wearing,outside wearing,tires "cupping"...when driveing ,does it want to stay on the road,or is it trying to go somewhere..all DD smoke..alittle when starting,a little more when you are climbing a hill& have the coals poured to it,all DD leak a little,don't let that scare you,(kinda like a Harley) |

Thanks two dogs, that will help alot. The one I'm looking at tomorrow, the owner won't be able to drive it. He has become crippled, which is why he is selling it. But that is a good way to tell at least how it's latest owner drove it. I gotta get an ice pick. |

if a tread depth is 3/4" inch deep when new & has 3/8 " now it's 50% used....age matters also, look for cracks in sidewall ...if a tire is over 7 years old ,getting "questionable" as far as use.

I think that the percent of useful life is figured after the minimum legal tread depth. At the least, that ought to be 2/32 on the drivers and 4/32 on the fronts.
It doesn't affect the percentage much, but it really shows up when the tires are getting well worn. Heavy duty tires have considerable variation in the tread depth when new, so you need to know the actual depth that they started life at in order to figure it out.

International Bus Parts in Apopka, FL has rolled body panels...in stainless too. 407-880-9700, ask for Rich. I helped install some on an '06 last spring. Cheers...JJ |
