I am wondering how many of you have gone through the process of scrapping out a bus for it's metal content. As I watch the price of scrap metal rise and look at my MC5C covered with snow and likely not to be back on the road in my lifetime along with the fact that nothing on there fits my GM. I am wondering how much of what is in there. The motor and trans could be saved easily. There is a lot of stainless and I think the whole double roof is aluminum. I was wondering about one of those circular body cutters on a chain saw like the fire department uses? Remove all the glass and frames first. I am not sure that's what I want to do with it. Just curious as to how much work that would be. Maybe the whole idea is sacrilege and no one would ever scrap one?

Why not donate it and get a tax write off. That seems like a waste of good needed parts.http://www.carangel.com/

I don't have a problem scrapping one out.

But I do have a problem with not saving the "unobtanium" stuff for future needs.

I would save any good or better siding, bumpers, lighting, gauges, etc. That stuff stacks up fairly flat and could bring a patient person a reasonable return.

The last round of high metal prices probably decreased our used bus parts access by half, if not more.

Cory, I understand where you are coming from, but I also know that if I donate a bus that is not roadable at the present time to Rawhide Boys ranch or anywhere, they will just end up scrapping it anyway.
Cliff, when you start trying to decide, which of the body panels is worth saving, you end up keeping everything.
There is a lot to recommend my selling it as is or saving it. I am just exploring the various possiblites. A good running motor, automatic trans, new tires are all things that could be saved for sure.
I just was kicking around the idea and wondering how much work it would actually be. I am sure it's not the first one that went to scrap.

Will the guy that left the phone message call me back. It got erased before I got your name written down (see too old to build busses)lol

Johnnnnnnnnnnnn Stop Waittttttttt;

We have a Saudi 1979 mc5cs we could sure use the siding or whole door from the 1st bay past the Gen bay on the drivers side and the hinge also if you decide to give it away or? how much do you want. We are in California Sacramento area. ours is off a 9 and doesn't match and the hinge is missing so it folds down poorly.

I personally dismantled a 30 foot flxible city bus, separating the different metals. Kept the V730, swapped the 6V-71, kept the hub mounted wheel studs, all the brass fittings and some air brake parts, wheels, generator, some other usable items and received about $1300 for the scrap ( three years ago); paid $1000 for the bus. Figure about 1 month on dismantling it, plus 2 sets of torch fuel. I got real good at removing rivet heads with a chisel and a hammer. Scrap is real high now.

Lol Dave. Easy does it. We haven't done anything yet. I have had a couple people call me with offers to buy the whole bus, so I am not sure what I will do with it, but being in Northern Wisconsin, I can guarantee nothing will happen for several more months as everything is buried up here. If it comes to scrapping it out, I will be giving everyone an opportunity to help in "parting it out".
John, thanks for the comeback. That's kind of the info I was looking for. What kind of a job it would be.

It isn't that difficult, time consuming. You will also need an impact drive screwdriver and plenty of extra Phillips bits. I get the ones for installing drywall.

Agrres with Jack. He says it all with such a tid bit of a comment..

My two cents---after years of scraping buses, farm and construction equipment wait for the scrap price to peak, save your sweat and take the mixed material unseperated price and have the recycler pick it up all while sipping on a cup of hot coffee looking out the kitchen window with a big grin as it is loaded up.

Our Transit Museum just scrapped a 40 foot GM Fishbowl. We took as much off it as we could. Body panels, some glass and electrical components. The 6V71 and VS2 transmission were not worth keeping. Here are suggestions if you or anyone on the board are thinking of sending the coach to a scrapper.
• You can save the towing charge by cutting the bus up yourself, but it’s a big pain in the butt.
• Call the recycling company a couple of days ahead and let them know the bus is coming. We learned this one the hard way when there was no one on site with authority to take the bus.
• Make sure the recycler will take the coach with fluids. With all the new environmental regulations, recyclers have to ensure fluids won’t be spilled on the ground. Some recyclers here are not permitted to take vehicles with fluids, so find out ahead of time.
• When you’re parting out the coach, make sure the air brake system is not compromised so you can release the brakes for towing.
• Don’t throw a lot of extra junk in the bus to pad the weight unless it’s all metal. I’ve seen recyclers refuse buses for this reason.
We got around $1,200 for the Fishbowl we scrapped 2 weeks ago and the scrapper took it with fluids.

Bryan that VS2 tranny would fit your and maybe ok to rebuild too..
I have a solution to the scrapping problem! find a very lazy guy, tell him what has to be done and how long,Tell him that you will split the proceeds with him when it is completled. He will hurry and get the most out of it with the least amount of work. IT WILL WORK!!

Hi Gomer,
Yes, you’re right and I hate to see any bus scrapped but that’s just the bus nut in me. The Transit Museum had a Flyer 800 series transit bus that we picked for parts over several years. It saved our bacon so many times because there are parts that you don’t think of keeping and suddenly you need it (like the foot treadle mat to open the rear door). The municipality in our new location was harder to deal with and keeping derelict buses on the property was against the by-laws. So we had to make the decision. The Flyer went to scrap a month before and we kept the “T” drive 6V71 and transmission. That was the first lesson with the recycler when they refused the bus because there was no one on site to approve receiving it. We had to pay an extra towing charge.

The fishbowl was another story because the transmission was shot and the floor was rotted out. I fought to keep the coach but they have 2 other fully restored fishbowls so I lost the argument. With the by-law officers breathing down our back, it had to go.

John & Barb ---

Got to thinking about this and had to add a post:

Please, PLEEEEZE don't scrap that bus. My gosh, the srap price- even with parting it out - isn't nearly worth destroying that bus. (See my post under 'Rebuild DD3s')

back in 89 when we got our 4905, part of the deal was we Had to take a Gm city bus with it. It cost us a dollar to transfer title. They just wanted both to be gone..I sold the transit to a scrapper for 600 and he arranged for the wrecker and flatbed...and I sat back and had coffee with my 600 bucks
