Hi Guys -

Ed, my BusNut bud, recently honored me with his take-off DD3s. (He switched to springs on his beautiful Eagle). Mine work fine, but I'd like to absolutely KNOW the brakes are primo. Or is this overkill, as in the 'If it ain't broke don't fix it' category?

Anyway, my (tentative) plan is to replace the brakes and keep the old ones for 'down the road.' Or is this stupid too? Some have told me I'll never log enough miles to need the 2nd set.

(As you see, I'm very decisive :-))

But to my main question: How do I tell if Ed's old ones need overhauled? I mean, they look fine but I (obviously) can't see inside (not that I'd know what I'm looking at anyway).

And I don't want to take them apart and damage something that's still in good shape.

Ideas? Guidance? Catcalls?

Many thanks again, Ed (I've got some good photos but waiting for your post?)

Thanks for any advice.

Nellie

Catcalls and wolf whistles from Wisconsin! The only thing I can tell you about DD3's is make sure you know what is leaking before buying parts. Mine was leaking and I ordered the new diaphrams (there are two) at a cost of $187 only to find out it was the o-rings on the shaft leaking at a cost of $2. Oh well, the diaphrams make dandy coasters! Good to see you back on here again.

"Catcalls and wolf whistles from Wisconsin!"

Hey, John...

Same atcha (blush). And thanks for the tip... exactly the kind of mistake I was worried about making. Much better to learn from your experience - my furniture's not good enough to need a coaster :-).

So it's okay to open these things up to just inspect? Anything special I should look for?

I've been following your posts about the MC5 - I sure hope you don't end up scrapping it... not enough of these old babies around anymore. Depending on shape, I know a couple of folks (besides myself, that is) who might be interested.
Wanna PM, share some details?

Thanks again,

Nellie

Hey Nellie, If you go to www.mybendix.com and under literature type in DD3, there are some nice blow up photos and info in PDF format on these brakes that will help you understand how they work.
About my MC5C. A lot to think about with that, I was just exploring some avenues other than letting the thing turn into a solid block sitting in my field. I will get a hold of you off the board and talk to you.
Take care,

John

John -

Thanks for that link. I'll click on it tomorrow (before the games start, of course :-)) and start my research. Just occurred to call Ed and ask how those brakes were working before he switched them out. Should have done that before, but just assumed they were acting up (Duhhh... me and my blonde moments!).

Please do contact me... would like to yak, maybe figure something out.

Hey, you know how science classifies a blonde who dies her hair brown?

No?

"Artificial intelligence." :-)

Go Packers!!

Gomer -

So you're saying there's 'hidden intelligence' out there (or is it 'Artificial Dumbness')? Either way, when it comes to DD3s and sparky things I'm just Naturally Dumb.

But thanks for the morale boost - you are my Shining Knight!

Nellie

Hey Nellie,
Although science classifications usually have a analytical database to back up there findings, in todays social society the politically correct term would be " Peroxide Dependent"

Nellie,
The brake cans were working when I took them off but don't know how old they are.I know at least 12 years old(time dad and me have had bus).I know they need the external boots around the shafts. At least take apart clean and inspect the diaphragm.I don't know if I would want to depend on a 12 year old rubber when you hit it hard!! Should have stayed down there with you guys still too cold here.

Hi Ed!

You're right, you guys shoulda stayed down here. Just checked your weather and it looks rather... FRESH. Thanks for the email and great pic (mind if I post it?). And I'll crank up that music, just to keep those Quebeckers snarling :-).

And thanks for info on the cans. Yep, I''ll replace those boots and check the diaphragms. I mean, what self-respecting gal would trust a 12 year old rubber? (Geez, don't you guys ever change wallets?)

Loved your raspberry 'lightening' - the liquid's long gone but still sucking on those fat juicy berries. Beats the heck outta Fids' Turpentine Coladas.

BTW, Fids... quit bitchin' and check your junk box. I've sent you several emails (probably evaporated from Colada fumes).

Nellie :-)

Nellie...I tried again
and
at the risk of going over the double yellow line here
I check my Junk box frequently
sometimes 3 times in a night
if I've been near the turpentine container...
do try again
I did!
