Jim The only problem with changing a 671 from 4 speed spicer, to auto is the lack of power. You need to consider turboing the 671 and change, or 871 with auto transplant. 871 can be done but be careful of the drive shaft angle, my friend rotated the rear axle to get a better angle to help stop the vibration. Lots of people have done it. Are you able to go to the busin 2004? John |

not a expert on thios but ive been told it is hard to do because of the difference in the driveshaft angle which is different from the 06, also power issues are involved, id go into this carefully. 06 uses a diffent rear end, not sure about the length of the engine which could also be a issue. also the spicer gets better mpg and the coach will run faster with the spicer, i lost 2.5 mpg and knocked off about ten mph when i changed my 06, i would not do it over again if i had another bus Frank Allen 4106 |

Frank Did you go from stick to auto? Or from auto to stick? Thanks John |

John, stick to automatic, many argue about the loss of speed and the loss of mpg, i just know what mine did with no other changes, speed dropped from 80+ to 76, mpg dropped from 10 to 7.5 and those are the facts of it, also runs hotter because of the heat exchanger, on the plus side ive never had a problem with the 730 , i guess you have to give up one thing for the other. In this day and age, it's not practical anymore to try to swap anything into a 4104 other than repair or overhaul what it has now. You would end up spending much more money than you would if you were to start with a coach with an automatic transmission in the first place. |

Jim I have been involved in doing two of them. Mileage went down. One we speeded up the top end about 8 mph and the other we slowed down it's top speed about 5 mph. The new top speed being about 74 mph. We made most of the adapters ourselves, a lot of work. The radiators have a extra row of tubes from stock. With 238 hp engine and a trans. heat exchanger it will not work in hot weather. Using a air exchanger only for the V730 it works the engine works harder and on 110 degree days still need a desert mister for the engine and transmission cooler. I think 275 hp would work OK. The 238 is OK on the flats without pulling anything. One we have repowered to a 295hp 8V71 N60 and A timing and my friend is very happy with the results. He wishes he had the 4.12 rear end ratio from a 4106 or new bus as he is now running basically against the governor with the 4.43 we currently have. I would have repowered mine 3 years ago if it were not for some health problems. My personnaly opinion with all that it takes it would be best to repower to a 6V92/V730 power package with cradle, radiator, every part you can get from the donor bus. No matter which way you go you will have to flip over the axle or get a later model axle. The later model third member will also be needed. You can not cheat on the rear axle and third member. Much cut the firewall, and reinforce it for the transmission almost the same as a repower. Move the RH motor mount. The distance from the RH side of the bus to the trans side of the bellhousing is exactly the same on the 4104 and 4106. So if you use this as your major reference point it does not matter what engine you install because everything will align exactly as the factory designed it. In short I would do as Phil suggest only repower do not add a V730 to the inline 671. The work will be about the same or maybe easier with the repower. My guess is both routes will cost about the same where you do the work or have someone else do it. WE did our long before 9-11 and the repowers were not as cheap as they reciently have been. The repower will get better mileage, not have the heat problems, you will not have to engineer a number of part by the seat of your pants, not have to Turbo you engine or find a Turbo one which is recommended, you will have a support group to help you with problems engine and tranny, the other you are on your own DD & Allison can not or will not help you, probably more. My opinions from experience. Yes I like the automatic I think of it like going from a Volkswagon bug to a Cadallic. I have shifted enough in my life and do not want to do so any more. My opinions only. |
