For lack of proper voltage I TOASTED not only the Starter Motor Armature but the Solenoid as well.... less than 60 seconds of abuse turning the whole unit into a solid mass of Epoxy & Copper windings! Removal of these Starters is a well know pain in several areas, Once out, I took it to Fernando @ LUNA Rebuilders in Tucson, (their Rep is SO good that I will pay your bill if they screw-up!) done biz with him since Jan of 1987. With my new Starter in hand I stopped at the Machine shop & had John turn/cut down a 15/16th's socket on BOTH ends & trim the length of a box wrench . the box wrench is for the initial loosening of the nut & the final tightening.. the tall socket is the "before" size...smaller one is the modified one. Notice all the adaptors? Yes I actually do use a quarter inch ratchet to undo the nuts once they are loose... 1/4 in. drive gives me more wiggle room under the starter to catch that lower nut....those 1/2 inch extensions are just TOO FAT to make the job easy (Message edited by Jack_fids on February 08, 2011) |

One the main obstacles to a smooth R&R is the dreaded "Bottom Bolt" In the photo you'll notice that my Bolts have been replaced with Studs.... always a wise choice where Aluminum is the base, preventing the wear on the alum. threads from R&R'ing parts. There is NOTHING like the feeling one gets when the Alum threads strip out on a 4106 Bellhousing ! (no experience there yet!) In the photo, right under the ARROW pointing to the LONG stud that needed to be shortened, is the reason for the shortening, that cast ridge under the Arrow prevents a straight approach to the fastener, the 15/16th's nut. That ridge plus the body of the starter itself impede a smoooth removal & promote the use of words best saved for under the Bus. I trimmed off the excess length of the stud, as indicated by the placement of the nut... the threads to the right of the nut are now history. This gives me the wiggle room needed to slip my Spl Box wrench over the nut for breaking the nut loose but then I also have the wiggle room needed to slip that short socket over the nut and back the nut off. |

Jack while you have the starter out, can't you grind that ridge off just enough to get the socket on straighter? I saw that done and was much better with removal. Gomer |

Jack not to rain on your thinking but why did you not change that stud out and replace it with the proper bolt that you can put in with a socket and extension with no trouble. most starter rebuilders have them or go to WILLIAMS Diesel IN Tucson and get one. |

GoMer...I get a bit worried grinding things off Blocks that I have no prior instruction or experience with. Mel... putting a bolt thru 2 holes when you cannot see it (starter 1st- then the bellhousing) and then expecting to "square into" the threads is a larger challenge than just puttin a nut on a stationary stud... no wobble, no buggered threads & no chance of needing a BIG insert to solve a problem. Using studs to initially hang the Starter from takes a ton of weight off the re-assembly.... you don't have to maintain lift while fidgeting to run a bolt into Aluminum. Every time you break a steel bolt loose from an Alum. anchor, you decrease the life & integrity of the threads. The rule I was taught was... if you are fastening to alum or cast iron use studs to eliminate thread damage. |

I would recommend the studs with a reduced diameter and no threads for the last 3/8th inch. That will reduce the chance of cocking the nuts and damaging the threads or buggering the end thread or two working the starter back into place. |

Chessie... you are so correct.. & I'd prefer it that way only there is no place I have been where such an item can be "aquired" or purchased for that matter..! Les.... unbeknownst to you.... or your kind (construe that as the only "close to complimentary utterance" I'll make concerning your character) I have a deep investment & appreciation in Animation.... I'm pretty well versed in those who drew, voiced & produced "Cartoons". You could not know that Chilly Willy's theme song was sung by one of the most famous voices in the business! June Foray There is not a single person on this forum who has not laughed in appreciation of her work. She did dozens of voices for Walter Lanz Productions, Chilly Willy among them. Here's a little bit of her Bio.... "Most recognizable, though, is her work for Jay Ward: she played nearly every female on The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show, including Natasha Fatale and Nell Fenwick, as well as male lead character Rocket J. Squirrel (a.k.a. Rocky Squirrel). Foray also voiced Magica De Spell and Ma Beagle in the televised cartoon DuckTales. Most significantly in the later part of her career, she had a leading role voicing Grammi Gummi on the television series, Disney's Adventures of the Gummi Bears, Walt Disney Pictures' first major animated television series, where she worked with her Rocky & Bullwinkle co-star Bill Scott for the final time until his death in 1985."- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/June_Foray June is alive and still working at the ripe old age of 93.... we ALL grew up listening to her voice some of our favorite animated characters as kids.....50-70 years ago! I share a special aspect with her, Hans Conried, Bill Scott, Paul Frees & Daws Butler...all of whom worked the "Rocky & Bullwinkle Show" as voice talent. You could not have known of my connection or my attachment to her.... OR that the Chilly Willy song had just been the topic of a conversation between myself and another Animation buff just 2 nights ago! Thanks for the link......! (hey Ace...do you believe it? I hi-jacked my own thread!) (Message edited by Jack_fids on February 08, 2011) |

Jack - Your first two posts in this thread were very informative, especially with the attached photos. Thanks! As you know, I'm quite familiar with steel studs used with aluminum - hated it when one came out while removing a 1-bbl Rochester! Thus, I certainly understand your thinking about this persnickety GMC design. FWIW & HTH. . .

Geez - This thread is scary. Partly ‘cause I can’t follow it, partly ‘cause I’m wondering if my MCI is as complicated (difficult) to fix? And what about this voltage thing? I’ve started with low batts (they ran down in cold weather) and never burned anything up. Looking for guidance before I screw up. Nellie PS. I met that seal. Wondered who he was bitchin’ about... |

Nellie, you got lucky, Jack wasn't. Keep the batteries properly charged, no worries. In offensive layperson's terms, the lower the voltage, the higher the amperage draw in an attempt to make up for it, amperage makes heat, heat burns things. I do not know any wildlife well enough for any inquiries as to their sexual activities to be anything but impolite, or to be misinterpreted as some sort of invitation. happy coaching! buswarrior |

You know what..? you're ...PENGUINIST"S ... ALL of you! I've spoken to legal representation concerning an equal rights suit against everyone on this forum except Ace ('cuz weez Budz). . . Just pulling your leg again Ace for no good reason... . .....And tomorrow I'm contacting GREENPEACE & PETA... HA.!!! wash that back & see how smooth it tastes! (you Canuckz got off EZ this time....eh...) Dave, the original punchline is the perfect "Sleeper" set-up for that moment later to start out all over agin with the same gagline (leading people to think you are repeating yourself) but drop this on them instead "and the Penguin sez your supposed to be working on the problem not looking at my pants." ..... THEN later still when the crowd is half shot start it all over for the 3rd time only this time use "and the Penguin sez, " yeh, a smart Gal can pick-up a quick 20 fish that way." Using the same set-up 3 times with a different "Punch" ea. time leads the listener to believe they already KNOW what you are going to say... until you fool them AND make'em laugh the 2nd tiime... they love the "twist" in the joke when you try it for the 3rd time they know that -they DONT know what's coming - but they do know you made them laugh twice with the "same joke" so they -KNOW- this going to be better than the 1st 2 or you wouldn't be going out on a limb for the 3rd time.... & about this time they think to themselves "this guy knows LOTS of Penguin jokes!" When you deliver the 3rd Punch they think you're really funny but what's really funny is you got them 3 times on the same joke! NOW IF the the audience is just right...really in the bag now, and later if you feel like treating them to a bit more you can start it all over again Now you have them in the palm of your hand they fell for it 3 times & loved it so this time they're gonna laugh no matter what you say "and the ones that really laughed before are going to be writhing on the floor which makes everyone laugh even more"(Norm Crosby) You set'em up with the lead & you punch them with this... "YA Mack.... and you look like a mechanic so whatz yur point?" When you can milk 4 solid laughs out of the same old retread people think your a genius....& they love to be had. I like pullin Ace's leg and KNOW he dont think I'm a genius....more like Jackass I'll bet! That's OK tho...another perspective is always good A lot of people just love to be had especially when it comes to laughter the real joke is we are all suckers for something.... & mostly for ourselves. eh? Me, I got no use for Penguins.... I spent 5 yrs. in the Antarctic Program shot DAYS worth of MoPic film and thousands of stills .....and I have about 10 minutes of Penguin film and maybe 2 dozens stills of them..... they stink like pigs are as dumb as the box the rocks came in they're viscous when ashore taste like Goose cooked in 90wt gear lube when they bite your ankle enough times you boot'em like a football they come right back of seconds! They have only 2 redeeming values to make little girls say Awe! and feed Skua's & Seals. . . . (Message edited by Jack_fids on February 09, 2011) |

B-Warrior (in a valiant but ultimately futile attempt to keep at least some signal in the noise) wrote "Keep the batteries properly charged, no worries. In offensive layperson's terms, the lower the voltage, the higher the amperage draw in an attempt to make up for it, amperage makes heat, heat burns things." Those are words of wisdom to heed. I say "the best way to ruin a starter is to have a bad battery -- the best way to ruin a battery is to have a bad starter". And these are avoidable problems -- just do things right. |

This is a place for BUSNUTS to "question, express an opinion, connect a viewer to your preferred product..." We gather here for many reasons other than to wait around for someone in need to post frantic question of people with a lot of knowledge about a lot of subjects, for free...not that anyone minds that, it's just that this is a COMMUNITY of PEOPLE. Most of us retain a sense of humor as a device to express camaraderie, respect & a desire to have fun. We've all busted knuckles on the same Coaches, made the same mistakes & fools of ourselves in public. We all paid too much, cut too short and thought to little somewhere along the line.....and we ALL know that we ALL have done it. WE'RE ARE ALL IN THE SAME BOAT none lower, none higher, ALL BusNuts...people who are different. If you can't swallow Vanilla don't eat it, no one forces any one here to read anything or make them laugh or not laugh or LAUGH If you felt a swipe while here all you had to say was "I didn't appreciate that" which is pretty easy a lot easier than making a permanent commitment to something you will likely regret when you need some expertise for example. I gave you an honest, informative & experienced reply that was respectful.... tell me what could I have said that would make you happier? Taking offense where none is intended or even offered kind of limits a guys ability to interact with anyone. AND if you take seriously the razzing that goes on here between friends you are missing the concept ....different perspectives are FREE for the taking & adopting grab one and have some fun.... It's Winter....people can't wait to GET OUT... and when you're stuck IN.... writing on the wall becomes an art form. Come on back.... you had a good joke on us! |
