Hi all, need some help, had back surgery and legs are messed up.Ive got a 66 Eagle 01 and thinking about putting in a automatic trans, its got a 8V71T with jakes, stock rear end 3:73. Need to find out the best trans to fit my needs and someone near the florida panhandle who can install the thing. Since now i cant do the work myself.Looking for one that will run good on the flats and then pull the mountians without being a traffic hazard.I love my 10 speed but cant work the clutch now. I know there are alot of good Bus Nuts out there that know about the subject, i hadnt thought much about installing an automatic before untill now. Thanks Lee |

Have you thought of converting to an air clutch? Had one in a ACF Brill several years ago and it worked fine; just like using the brake treadle. |

there are several choices... most common would be an allison ht740.... 4 speed... or an ht750.... a 5 sped.. either is a good choice... to do the switch, you'll need the transmission... possibly some motor mounts... a different flywheel...its called a flex-plate... a shifter... several choices here... air or cable....a transmission oil cooler....and modificatios made to the driveshaft....its not dificult to do the conversion, but expect to spend $10-15k....a good take-out trans will be $3-5k by itself... new? a lot more.... parts get expensive...labor?? a shop will charge $75 an hour..an independent somewhat less.... |

What sort of work did you have done to your back? Perhaps your disability is only temporary and things will improve with time. Also, you only need the clutch to start and stop. With practice you can shift without the clutch at all. Lastly, as John wrote, you can convert to air clutch, which won't take much pressure to operate at all, although there is a period where you will have to learn to get used to it. Surprising how much we depend on feedback from the controls. |

I would guess that there is some kind of handicap control system that would allow you to operate an air clutch with a button on the gearshift lever, similiar to a hi-low two speed axle shifter. Richard |
