For many reasons I don't like going to cities (expensive, and difficult to park a bus near public transportation). My family is doing some arm twisting to visit NYC, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island etc. I have no idea where to even start, what to see, where to park, where to camp, what to avoid, etc. No toad, bus only, so that complicates things a bit. Six children and a tight budget most likely will mean no Broadway shows or anything that one thinks of when you visit NYC. Hopefully you all are getting the idea. Niagara falls will also be in the loop. Fuel prices are getting worrisome. Any help will with this will be greatly appreciated!

Laryn -

I obviously cannot help you with routing, etc. for NYC, but you seriously should reconsider taking in a Broadway show. One of those "bucket list" things for the entire family.

Especially the longest-running play in Broadway history, the phenomenal "Phantom of the Opera." (Seriously, the movie just isn't the same AT ALL!) Or enjoy the high-energy story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons in "Jersey Boys". Try to go to a mid-week matinee to save a few pennies for fuel.

Personally, I'd rather do Broadway than watch a waterfall. . . Niagra's nothing compared to Yosemite!!

From the Pizza Guy!

Find car rental place near but not in city. Park bus, rent car. Visit the city & get back out.

There is a kiosk in Times Square selling the left over tickets for tonight at cut rate prices.

Check in there early and act spontaneously!

I've taken entire busloads of folks to New York that do just that!

happy coaching!

They'll look back on this for the rest of their lives...
with that in mind-

DO NOT miss the American Museum of Natural History...
it is arguably the 2nd most important repository in the world
of it's kind.
You can spend 3 days there EZ.
You can hold a 5 pound bar of gold in your bare hand there (or could).. they'll never forget that!
Get them near the base of any of the great Bridges or better yet walk across the Brooklyn Bridge.
See the remnants of Coney Island....
Walk from Central Park to Times Square.
Plan for a day at Ellis Island & the Statue of Liberty.
Eat LOTS of Pizza, the kind you buy on the sidewalk thru a window...
every 12 blocks it changes style & is better than the last slice..
fold it long ways down the middle or expose yourself as a rube from the fly-over.
Shopping is over rated & out of this world....
FAO Swartz is a sure hit for anyone under 18 or over 40!

Don't forsake the Chrysler Building over the Empire State,
Walter P. was a MAN not an investment group, the edifices should be considered in that light...
BTW & fwiw, the Walt Chrysler Bio is better than the Walt Disney one.
There are 100 of small museums thoughout the area....
if you have any special intest it's likely you'll find a private or small historicall depository...google it.....
lots of them will open for you
if you just call & express genuine interest
....show your appreciation......

* stay away from guys playing 3 card Monte or pay Harvard education money for a sidewalk education...

people are friendly when you ask for help & the park around the AMNH is a fabulous place to people watch & nibble.

I could spend a week on Manhattan alone just eating
eat vertical when the sun is up ...on the go

ABOVE ALL...don't let THE SCHEDULE rule...
enjoyment & education leisurely are priceless...!

When you come out of the Lincoln tunnel, the women on the sidewalk are not the Welcoming committee?

All seriousness aside;
bring a sign that says "hey BUSNUTS we are here in NEW YORK CITY" and go to the "Today Show" at Rockefeller plaza it is free.
Good morning America is also in that area.

Remember Pizza is called PIE not pizza and you can buy it by the slice, and a regular coffee is with cream and sugar not black?

Dog race are fun at the Meadow-lands track.
You can take the ferry over to New Jersey also form Statue of Liberty.

You will see vans pull up to other cars on the street ad strip a car in less than 5 minutes and leave. Yes you saw it no they don't need your help. Just keep walking.

As you get to the corners take a big breath of the steam coming from the drains and you will remember why you live in the country.

Have fun Dave

Hey Dave, Dinkins is no longer in charge of the city! you wont see women at the tunnels and no hulks of cars on the side of the roads anymore.
The hardest part is getting around. Cabs are pricey especially during rush hours. The subways are good IF you know what your doing. I usually have a guide (my wife Dori is X-city girl) but with the new phones and gps stuff its easier.

There are lots of buses in the city including double decker open roof tour buses and lots of tour buses idling here and there, so you can get your bus fix. The architecure is unbelievable, people watching the best. there has to be guides and online stuff of what and how to see NY. I second the museum of nat history!
If you go to Ellis island it can take half a day as well as seeing /getting to the top of the Empire State builing.
Our youngest girl just got married at city clerks office Friday and it was 24.00 for a round trip train ticket into the city including a 4.50 metro card that you swipe to ride the subways. 2 dogs with kraut was 4.50. Its definetly safer these days (i say safe) and people will help if your lost and still mow you down while walking! Mosr dangerous thing is crossing the street. You wont regret going.

It might be a good idea to get in touch with Luke at IBP and get his ideas.

This is good stuff, keep it coming! Car rentals are not desirable unless I can find a good deal on something that holds eight. Would that be better than paying for eight on public transportation? I don't know what kind of fees are involved with a car vs paying to use public transportation everywhere. I also didn't know there were discount tickets for Broadway shows. Bad economy and children in collage has put a big financial obstacle in our path. I am selling scrap metal and old oil cans from my grandfather's estate to fund this adventure. So far I have $70. That's enough fuel to get me 100 miles out of town.

It's hard to believe that just a little over 20 years ago we actually drove our Class A motorhome into New York City and parked for a few hours on the street near the UN. I don't think I'd try that now. It's sad how the world has changed.

Laryn, I have looked into this as well and found this campground in NJ:

http://www.libertyharborrv.com/index.htm

It sounds like it is in a parking lot - but it is right near the ferry boat and once you get into the city - the subway can take you everywhere you need to go.

I havent stayed at the campground - i intended to stay there while doing business in the city, but ended up getting an apartment in Queens instead.

Hope this helps,
John
