I recently changed the motor oil in my bus's engine, an 8v71 (1975 model bus). I used straight 40w Delo...my question is will the oil pressure reading at idle and cruising speed be different using a multigrade oil vs straight 40wt?

Jerry
DO NOT even think of useing a multi grade oil in a 2 stroke engine. This has been discussed here many times.

DON"T USE ANY MULTI-GRADE IN A 2-STROKE!! they will throw more oil than you can keep in LOL Always use straight 40 Delo in 2-cycle as Bill has stated. Good Luck.

Oops Forgot! Oil pressure will drop when using multi grade oil in a DD. The sae ratings of multi grade oil is it will be a 10 wgt until it warms up and will change viscosity as it get warmer to 40 wgt [10w40] DD are like any vehicle in cold temps oil is thicker as you use straight 40,That is why they made lighter sae ratings. Hope this clarifies the thang LOL If not go to AMSOIL.COM and search the viscosity ratings of oil. VERY INFORMATIVE!! If you can't find it,give me your address and I,as a dealer will mail anyone who ask for it. No charge except to flippers and dog lovers LOL

I agree about the type of oil to use, but I am also looking for ideal oil pressures at idle and at cruising speed.

Jerry,

Most of our Detroits will only make about 10 psi at idle warm, and about 40 psi at cruising speed.
Please add me to the list of people telling you NOT to use multi-weight

"Most of our Detroits will only make about 10 psi at idle warm, and about 40 psi at cruising speed."

If the idle is 10 psi the factory air cond on many coaches would not come on..

In order to engage the clutch to the AC the oil pressure had to be below 5psi on most GM.

So low pressure at Idle is no big deal, esp if the idle speed is by Da Book..

ll agree on this, get that multi grade out of your motor before it starts to give you greif as once that starts it is to late to stop it from causing major trouble. there is a good side to this when you drain this oil out the inside of your motor will be a lot cleaner. it is like when the used car dealers dump a qt. of tranny fluid in a car motor so they can show you a nice clean dip stick when it is just a old poorly looked after car

I think many owners observe this low pressure at idle, but don't talk about it since the engine works well otherwise. The ones with the high idle numbers need to get an accurate gauge.

The Idle number causes me light-headedness...
so I'm going for an appropriate gauge 0-35/40
I imagine a decent ZFuel pressure Gauge would even be better than the 80 lb.'er now in the dash.

Jack, you want a gauge with a range of about twice the high running pressure. If it runs at 40, use an 80 or 90lb gauge. You want the reading to be about mid gauge when at normal temps & RPMs.

I would have!

Word play is all in the mind of the reader.
Perhaps Multi-Vis is happy
but I know nothing about gay preferences.

I do know that of all the Air Cooled engines I have torn down
the worst ones were full of sludge & the owners used MV Oil.

oh my!
I feel so out of the loop not to get the cross thread reference.
I sure hope those scissors are the safe kind and not the pointy ones.
Remember George, always run with scissors if they are pointy.
Weren't the Corver magazines the best part of that whole car line? At least the paper was shiny and didn't rust as fast as the cars did and rolled up made a quite good fly swatter.
I wonder if they could also be employed in an attempt to paper train a penguin. Might be some value in Corver after all

Rolled up it's quite possible they could be used in Penguin training.... for all the good it would do.

Seems to me ....
that once the topic of conversation has run out of steam,
informal banter usually follows, face to face & in the Cyber world.
How are the wife & kids Brian...?
Got that Coach ALL finished yet?

Oh and fwiw & BTW...
Chaos rules the universe...
We as humans try to structure events in vain attempts
to make them predictable
thus giving ourselves a sense of security
and order....
mastery of our "fantasy universe"!
(we even invented & believe that "guarantees" & "Laws" provide "certainty" in our futures...Pension funds & Wall Street anyone?)

(In case you find reasoning, logic & chaos interesting you might want to read THIS: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/09/science/09guitar.html?hpw
...about how "REASONED & LOGICAL we as Humans really are!)

Chaos is THE LAW,
we just have fooled ourselves for the last 150 years
into the belief that Technology & more rules
will eliminate that one thing we have grown to fear most...
the random unpredictability & uncertainty of Chaos.

In REALITY, it's the one thing we can ALWAYS count on!

I say roll with it, make chaos work for you!

Hey Dal,
can you forward a daily schedule & menu for the Shindig....

Chessie, the other site has been growing by leaps and bounds for a couple of years. I doubt that a bit of humor, or a lightening of the load of the worries that go along with bus ownership has much to do with it.
If a hobby doesn't come along with a sense of humor, then it can't be a hobby, it would fall into the category of a job,

I would hate to live or be associated with anyone that has no sense of humor.

"A person without a sense of humor is like a wagon without springs — jolted by every pebble in the road." Henry Ward Beecher

"A keen sense of humor helps us to overlook the unbecoming, understand the unconventional, tolerated the unpleasant, overcome the unexpected, and outlast the unbearable." Billy Graham

"Keep your sense of humor. As General Joe Stillwell said, 'The higher a monkey climbs, the more you see of his behind'." Donald Rumsfeld
