There are some transit spares going up for auction. Wondering if the reversing gear could be mated to a V730 and coupled to a manual engine to keep it simple to work on. Cabin fever you know. Part two. Is there a simple way to tell a electronic V731 series from a V730 without seeing the ID plate? I'm guessing there is more of a wiring harness. Some of these trannies have PTOs sticking out the curb side too. Part three. Is there a mechanical version of the series 50? Yah, I know about the series 50's rep for vibration and problems. Thanks Don 4107 (Message edited by doninwa on March 04, 2011) |

Is there a mechanical version of the series 50? Not that I have ever heard of. They can be hooked to an older mechanical tyranny. |

It's my understanding that Avis or Hertz commissioned what was know as the "Stevenson REVERSER" to retro fit there early RTS's change over to Series 50 - so that they could keep the V730 the V731 has a BIG 2" Round Connector near the PTO - the V730 doesn't There is now a V731RH for RH engines V drives or There is also the Voith and VF V drive trannies for RH engines - Golden Gate RTS's used them with RH 6v92ta's |

Bill can answer these questions because he has experience with this. All I know on this subject I learned form Bill, and I am not versed well enough on it to make sense. (Message edited by barn owl on March 04, 2011) |

Pete, what kind (and age) of transits would have a right hand V731 & RH engine? What engine? |

To the best of my knowledge DD Series 50's were introduced in '93 All the NOVA RTS's - from about '95-'04 had RH engines (mostly Series 50 some Cummins M11 & ISL's and with mostly V731RH - a few had Voiht and ZF trannies) some TMC RTS's after '93 ?? had series 50 WATCH OUT FOR HIGH MAINTENANCE - EGR SERIES 50 - think they started around '00 Pete (Message edited by Pete_rts/daytona on March 04, 2011) |

We used to run ZF transmissions at work with Cummnins L10 engines. Vibrate like crazy at idle. The windows rattled as well. The ZF couldn't take the constant stop and start of a transit bus so at $25000 for a rebuild of a ZF they used a reverser bolted to the Cummins L10 and used V730's instead. The reverser cost $10000 each and it wasn't long before the buses were scrapped so what a waste of money. Tax payers money that is. I bought one of the reversers for $100 just to have one. Great boat anchor but one of a kind item. The ZF transmission worked well in a highway bus like GO Transit but they didn't stop and start as often as a transit bus. The reverser allowed them to run a right hand turning engine like the Cummins with a transmission that normally required a left hand turning engine. Bill |

Don I downloaded some info off the net some 4 years ago, it has gone to cyberheaven. I will type the portion of interest to you. the 730 cannot be used with a RH engine The new right hand engine option The Allison V 700 transmission is now available with right hand engines and will be compatable with the Series 50, L10 and 6C 8.3 engines. Rather than change all the inner components of the V 700 to accept right hand engine rotation, the engine direction is changed ahead of the input bevel gear. This provides the simplest direction change by relocating the engine input shaft and changing the direction through one additional gear mesh. The heavy -duty helical gears are held in place by bearings fore and aft. This provides minimal gear los and minimizes noise. A new torque limiting damper provides torsionnally smooth input to the transmission, and has the unique ability to provide limited slip during engine start up and shutdown. So Don it looks that you should find a complete transit and use that as a donor rather than looking for that elusive missing piece that I went through looking allover and then some, and finding it allmost in my backyard. This is the story of the shifter that ended up me buying not one but two XL's. Hope this helps. Joe. |

Don Some times at sales things go for cheap. About a year ago there were some transits sold here for 1700 canuckies with 50 series and B5oo transmissons. I wasnot at the sale, because I would have had a hard time holding my hand down, instead we were in Phoenix warming up our bones. Going down there again next week trying to shake cabin fever and getting over this dreadfull winter we have had to endure this year. |
