Does anyone have any imput..........

I have found an Allison HT 740 in an 1978 FireTruck behind an 8v71. Only has 48K miles. It is in Georgia and shows bad rusting around the wheel wells. Was running before they removed some parts from the Fire equipment and stripped off the cab front area.

Any concerns, thoughts, comments?

Peter.

You get the Transmission and I will get the Engine
that will fit In my MCI-7 the one In there smokes and according to my DDmanual that 8V71 In a FireTruck has either 370 or 400 HP. I would have bid on It but I am 3 states north of It

For my money 48k is a walk in the park for a HT740.

Fire Departments maintain their equipment meticulously and they have probably the strictest Preventative Maintenance Program of virtually any governmental agency.

I'd have to think the Allison is in fine shape.

Pull the dipstick, I'd bet the Tranny fluid will be cherry red and smell fresh.

Realistically, unless you can hear it run and move under it's own power, it is, as a friend of mine would say, "a pig in a poke".

BUT, I wouldn't hesitate in the least... UNLESS the tranny fluid smells burned compared to fresh, and the fluid is brown.

If the tranny was a really good deal,I might buy it even so...

I know you can find good deals, and some have mentioned $2500 or less for one, but I'd bet for the most part THOSE trannys would have a SIGNIFICANT amount more miles than that tranny has.

If it's a fire truck remember it's not how many miles but hours it has on it.
Fire Trucks sit at the fire scene and run for some time pumping water and what ever else they are required to do.
So get a oil sample on the engine and transmission oil's send them out for testing.
If the oil's check normal then perhaps go for it.

Peter,

Let me tell you what little I know about used fire engines. I have a little experience with them, with a fireman in the family and one of my buddies collects used aparatus.

Fire departments retire equipment LONG before it has reached anything near what could be considered end of life in any other line of work.

My buddy picks up engines that average $1,000 - $2,000 in price. Some much less. many have virtually new drivetrains in them in terms of mileage.

I have always thought that would be a great source, but I don't have the heart to cut up a fire engine.

Also, isn't the MT740 a T drive, while an MCI is V drive? I don't know, everything I do know about MCI's I've learned from this list.

Edit: Sorry, Tony is asking about the engine not the trans--I'm going to have some more coffee.

Gary,

The MCI is a T drive, as is the 740 Allison. However my MCI is now a Freightliner FLD 120 which is also a T drive, but from the other end.

Don't worry about some of the fire engines, they are often rotten with rust or have the water tank rusted out. That in itself will retire the truck as often it is impossible to repair it due to the way they are constructed.

Tony, He did say HT, not MT anyway (Damn Decaf!)

MCI's are T-Drive? Like My bird? Anyone care to send a pic of an engine compartment? I'm curious.

My buddy Jim, who collect fire engines--90% of them could be returned to service with a minimum of work. But we ARE on the west coast. He has one unit that goes back to the teens.

I got to steer tiller once on one of his Hook&ladders.

He has one, that was sometime in it's life "Upgraded" from a Gas v8 to an 8V71.

Now that one is a hoot to drive, you either start out at an idle, or floorboarded. Very difficult to get moving anywhere in between.

Yes, Gary MCI's are a T-Drive... what particularly would you like to see of the engine compartment?

Blatant Curiousity.

I was just wondering how close it was to my Bluebird.

Just a straight-on shot of an engine compartment, or if you know where one's posted on the web, that'd be cool.

I was operating under the impression that there was no similarity between a Bluebird and MCIs.

Why Gary, I'm surprized at you, I'd think you realize that the main similarity between them is: they are both quality made coaches (grin)!

Are you familiar with Craig Shepard's bus page? There are some pictures on his site of the rear of his MC-9 when he repaired his radiators and squirrel cages.

Actually his site might be benificial to a lot of people, he's done some very cool things and taken pictures of most of it.

I actually have his site bookmarked. Craig is incredibly meticulous.

Cool! I see the engine location in the section for Radiators and Blowers.

Are these Unibodies? The BB is not of course.

I see a repower ahead someday and I was wondering what possible donors were available.

Monocoque if you please kind Sir, Unit Construction, if you will!

Alright, yeah, its a Unibody (grin).

Did you get all the way down to the pictures of the wide open engine bay?

I don't say the "M" word. It's my own personal protest against the Frenchies.

I looked around--all I saw was the Radiator/Blower section.

I'm afraid I'm working on a couple of "War and Peace" documents and I haven't had much time for searching. If you can give me a hint as to what scetion the "Wide-Open" engine bay is in, that would be helpful.

I'm particularly interested in the engine cradle layout and how the Trans -> Axle interface looks.

Thanks,

Gary

Ah, I see, that's what I meant earlier when I asked what particular section...In the radiator blower section almost at the end, it shows Craig's engine bay minus all the exterior skin from the back though.

Maybe this weekend I'll take a shot or two of my engine bay, one through the access hatch, one of the cradle.
