Hi All,

I am about to replace my tires and would like to know which ones you all recommend. I have read that Toyos are good and reasonably priced. I am in NM presently and only have a few dealer choices available. I am looking for 11-22.5's.
Thanks,
Kat

Just replaced the Mich. low profiles with Hankook
11r24.5. the ride is great and the taller tire really makes "Huggy" cruise better.

and the price was right

I will check when I get home.... But I have the 11r22.5s They are Firstone and I "think" they are GS or something? I bought them last June and they were date stamped May 2010 so they were only one month old when I bought them (yea me!) As I recall they were about $250 each (mounted and balanced)

I have six TOYO M122 11R22.5 14 ply tires on my 4104 with about 43,000 miles on them with no sign of appreciable wear.

They are all position but I think they have been superseded by a different number. These are trick tires but have a great ride.

They were priced at considerably less than $300 when I bought them but anything made with oil has now jumped way up in price.

We have been quoted $1,150.00 mounted for 2 new tires 12Rx22.5 and mounting 2 others I have new 12Rx22.5

22.5 and 24.5 rims/tires are not interchangeable. the 22.5 or 24.5 refers to the rim size.

The 12r22.5 and 11r24.5 hold more weight with that extra bit of rubber then the 11r22.5 Off the top of my head I dont remember what the weight difference is, but if your coach is light and/or stripped then the 11r22.5 really make sense. When building or if your bus has a lot of wood, granite, marble or you carry a lot of people then the larger tires are recomended. From what I have been told handling, braking, etc. becomes a problem with having too much weight for the tires.... so proceed with caution

Some of Yokahama are low cost as well as having low rolling resistance , and they will last till replaced.

IT is not worth the cost of Michilen low rolling resistance tires for a bus camper as the annual mileage is far too low.

Buying services can lower the cost per tire a lot.

Here is a lift from a truck board on pricing.

I just used PDCA again to get the new wide single "energy"s. They said the program is not going away with the merger, as it is very successful. I saved around $200/tire over the cash price, but I they asked me not to advertise the price. Call 866-354-7322 if you want a free quote from them. Their best savings are on the Michelin wide singles in particular, but they cover other brands as well.

BE Wary of install costs when using this setup!

Thanks for all of the input. I have looked into the Firestone tires and found pricing anywhere from $261 all the way up to $351 per tire. I will check the Toyos too as I have heard good things about them.

My coach weighs in dry at about 25,000 lbs and I have 11R22.5's on it right now. They are too old to ride safely on and I am planning an extended tour around the US so I need good tires that will last.

Thanks again for all of the info.

Did you check on recapped Bandags or Michelins? (for the rear). They even look like new tires now and are decent quality with a couple of tread profiles available.

I'm assuming that 11R22.5s are the original size (actually 1100x20 bias ply) which with the lighter weight of a conversion are probably more than adequate.

No point in riding on oversize, more expensive and heavier tires.

There is too little clearance in the wheel wells even with original size tires!

Hi Gus,

I currently have 11R22.5's on my coach and they are fine. Just old...lol. I need new steering tires for sure and might be able to get recaps for the rear. Thanks for that tip John!

Tires are unique and different.

There is no set weight for a certain tire size, they are all different between brands and models.

Same for revolutions per mile (gearing and speedometer) and everything else, plies, speed rating, etc.

You can't just compare tires according to size.

Happily, we have the internet and detailed manufacturer and dealer websites in order to be sure we are comparing equivalent tires.

And, read what the tire re-manufacturers have to say, they have warranties. Goodyear, Michelin and Bandag are just three of them that have whole lines of tires with fresh rubber on them, with considerable savings.

Pay attention when Gus says we have only so much space: Between different tires, same size, different tire manufacturer/model, I have first hand observations that some will just rub a bit of the suspension in an MC8, some won't, at full wheel lock, depending on the shape of the tire shoulder.

There are slight variations.

Certainly don't go wider than your coach manufacturer intended without careful inspection with a committed tire dealer.

happy coaching!

Many trucks are using the Yoko 617 Steer as they are fairly cheap and do have the same low rolling resistance of the big buck Michelins.

Thanks FF...I'll check those too. My local tire dealer quoted me over $400 per tire for the Firestones and no balancing in that price.

Buswarrior...I fully comprehend what you are saying which is why I came here to seek good feedback.

Many Thanks,

Kat -

11R22.5 is now the most popular truck tire available, so lots to choose from.

Buswarrior brought out good points, so I'll add something to that:

The original specs for your coach called for tires that turned 495 revs per mile.

Tires that turn more revs/mile will use more fuel.

Tires that turn less revs/mile will have the opposite effect.

NOW,

If you have a V-730 with the 11R22.5s, it's a whole different ballgame.

Because of the bevel gear ratio in this automatic, you're already turning more engine rpm per mile than the stock manual gearbox. So that becomes another consideration when contemplating tires.

I've only found one tire, the 11R24.5 Bridgestone M726EL (a drive axle model), that, when coupled with the V-730, makes up for the different transmission gearing. But it requres 24.5 rims, which you don't have.

And you thought buying tires would be easy, eh?

FWIW & HTH. . .

Hi RJ,

I have an Allison 3 speed automatic that was installed by the previous owners. With the 11-22.5's that I have now I get about 10mpg. Not sure of the model number on the tranny but can refer to my paperwork.

Thanks,
Kat

RJ... in english, you are saying if you have a 730 with 11r22.5s (which I have) then by going with the 11R24.5 Bridgestone M726EL and sucking up and buying new 24.5 rims that the fuel mileage improves?

When I switched from the 12r22.5s I did notice about 1mpg loss but I didnt recalibrate my tripodometer either....

Teresa,

When you switched from larger to smaller tires you should have shown an increase in mpg because the odometer thinks you are going more miles than you actually are. That is, if it was accurate with the larger tire.

Neither of my buses have accurate odometers, one is off by about 10%. You can get much better accuracy by using your GPS.

I dont have GPS, I just went off what my uncalibrated hubodometer said..... so figures were probably too far off I guess AND when I went on the trip with the larger tires it was all flat land...

Hubodometer has to match the tire rev per mile, or it counts funny!

Still a brand new off the shelf part at the vendor near you.

Hi Tom,

I checked my paperwork. My tranny is a 730. I believe my mileage is good because I don't put my foot in it. This is my home. I carry precious cargo(2 dogs/2 birds). I see no reason to tear down the freeway and will always take the byways when they are available.

I work from "home" so am never in a hurry to get to the next destination. I relish the journey and love to enjoy the scenery when I am mobile.

Thanks,
Kat

I've written about GMC powertrains and tires numerous times here and over on the BCM BBS.

So rather than bore the troops again, check your email for a private dissertation.

Oh, and what's the VIN on your '06? PD4106-????

That's the best mileage report I have seen on the V730. You are very lucky to be doing so well.
