I have a 1966 Eagle-01 with an 8-V71 Detroit. I changed the oil and filter when I got the bus home from Virginia. That was in Nov, 2000. The bus hasent been run more than 1000 miles since then, But my question is this; Should I change oil by time, or mileage? I use Delo-100/ 40 wt.as recommended by the book. I can't find recommended mileage. Should I change now, or wait till I get another 1000 miles. That could take another year. What do you say?? Comments?? Oil is cheap compaired to a new motor. How about those oil analizer kits, are they any good? Should I have the oil analized , then follow their recommendations? Thanks in advance for your help. Doug Woodin--66-Eagle-01 Bunnell, Fl. |

most big trucks change oil every 10,000....most oil changes cost about 100...in a big truck you come in for a "B" service...which includes oil,oil filters ,fuel filters, grease, draing of air tanks should be every20 hours of operation. NOW..for the important part of your question...the oil anilisis kits,(picked up at any truck dealership) is the most important thing you can do for your engine..warm it up,take a sample send it in..they will tell you if you have problems..it is EXACTLY like your doctor takeing a blood sample...the dr. can tell you a thousand things ,from 1 ounce of blood,so can the test on your oil..metalic particles in oil,water,anti-freeze...this is the BEST $20.you ever spent ! |

We, at the N.D.O.T. have a computerized preventative maintenance program, and for our large diesel units it flags them to be brought in for an oil sample and lube at 5000 miles, an oil sample and lube at 10,000 miles, at 15,000 we do a "B" service, oil sample, oil change, lube and filters, and also do a complete bumper to bumper inspection. ALSO, the system will also flag a unit that has not had a "B" service after any 12 month period. Brian |

Doug, here's a hoot...the DD V71 Operators Manual says for: Highway Trucks and Buses Series 71 and 92 normally aspirated and turbocharged engines used in intercity operation, the oil change interval is 100,000 miles. (Direct quote from page 73) The drain interval may be extended beyond this if supported by used oil analysis results. For City Transit Coaches and Pickup and Delivery Truck Service the interval is lowered to 12,500 miles!!! And I thought I was punishing mine by going 7500 miles between changes. Probably the oil analysis route is the way to go though. ...JJ |

Doug-- your question is specific to the milage you are putting on your engine while you are working on your bus and not really using it. The answer is simple-- don't bother to change the oil until you start using your bus. It won't hurt a thing. JJ- get a new book, the 100,000 mile recomendation only lasted a couple of years before DD threw it out. --Geoff '82 RTS CA |

Goeff, I sincerely hope you don't really think I (or anyone else) on this 'Board would consider such madness? At my current use rate I'd be 109 before I hit 100K!!! ...JJ |

JJ-- I worked for Detroit Diesel when they were promoting the 100,000 mile oil change, and their thinking was that given the normal usage (loss) of the oil, just adding fresh oil would keep it clean enough with filter changes. I have never heard of anyone who actually took their advice! Another thing, trucks usually go 10,000 miles between oil changes, but they hold around 10 gallons of oil. Most of our engines only hold 6-7 gallons of oil, so a 5,000-7500 mile oil change interval makes more sense. --Geoff Happy New Year! |

I think you answered your own question when you said oil is cheap. In comparison to an engine rebuild or replacement, how much does 6-7 gallons of oil and a filter cost? I change oil on two different schedules, depending on how the bus is used. The first is based on mileage and the second is based on time. At the most, I want to get each bus that is in service into the shop and serviced once a month. For those buses that rarely go out and don't put on very many miles (less than 1000 miles annually) I get them in at least annually. I use a lot of oil but in five years of being in the bus business I have yet to have a major engine problem. Have a great New Year. I don't know about anyone else but I am excited about the possibilities. Mark O. |
