I read through several of the posts on this board and ya'll sound like the folks I need to talk to. I need all the info you've got on my coach. My folks had a '48 when I was a kid but I was too young to learn much about it. I need all the help I can get on her. She's sound mechanicly as far as I know (she came from Virgina and ran like a top the whole way). I'm going to gut her since the conversion isn't up to par in my opinion so I welcome any advice from the ground up.

Wow ! Finding one of those in good shape is real treasure. How bad is it rotted out? Sure it's mostly aluminum but it corrodes too after 50 years. I've have owned two of these that ran but the aluminum rot that I encountered with both forced me to sell or part out.

There are several great guys who know a lot more about these than me. Luke at US Coach is very friendly and informative and can help with parts and manuals. Rdub, somewhere in Ohio is re-doing one, and from the looks of it, doing a first class job. I'm sure he can help with many questions.

Buck-up boys and help the newbie out.

Best of luck.

I posted on the parts page and thought about this, has anyone ever tried to put gas shocks on the bay doors to hold them up? I know the shocks would give out eventually but will it work?

It works , BUT the loads imposed by a single shock help tear the rubber hinge material apart.

If necessary use two , one on either side, or switch to SS hinges.

A third option is a small angle bracket with a hole bolted on the side , and a simple chain & hook inside on the door. Very easy to hold door open, and was Std on Carry Coaches that made the NY airport runs for decades.

Works for me,

Got a question for you guys. I'm trying to get an idea of what the basics are going to cost me. I'd like to have basement heat and air(I'm planning now on running it through the original duct work, good idea bad, you tell me). As for water heater what about putting a unit in that's made for a house. Looks like to me it will be cheaper and bigger. And tanks what kind of ratio do I need fresh to grey and black. Also what kind of pump to you recomend. Any other advise you have on what this deal will cost to get where I can sorta camp in it till I get the whole interior finished will be greatly appreciated.

Most RV furnaces are fairly small and easily can be built into the finish cabenitry.

The orig ducts are inside the coach , not in the bays , and inside the coach is where I would rather be when fixing the unit.
Like coaches they suffer from dis use , and the new ones DIE (circuit board) from low voltage.

We installed a 40,000 bty Suburban and installed a Dinasour board before using it. Nice and quiet inside the cabinet and best of all when fired in the AM , the orig ductworks slowly sends hundreds of fingers of heat that come out the Orig ducts and clear every window on the side its installed (pax ).

Works for 7 years , so far,so for $400 its a tossup if it dies to bother to fix it or just slap in a new unit.

Hi Nick,
You picked a good group of guys to ask "how-to". They've been extremely helpful to me over the past few years and I appreciate their endorsement. I have GM PD3751 serial no. 030 (1947).I have completely rebuilt, redone, upgraded and converted this coach. We have traveled mostly North/South east of the Mississippi and are planning a West coast tour soon. Right now I have the entire front end off and am replacing the kingpins and shocks/leaf springs. I'm working with a bus service (review forthcoming) to upgrade to power steering. We live just west of Cincinnati. I'd be more than happy to help you avoid some pitfalls...some of which you have already named. Get in touch. Thanx again to fellow Busnuts. Rdub
