Watching TV I had a thought. Anybody ever thought about putting a "shaved door handle" kit on a bus. You could either get a aftermarket setup or build one of your own without much trouble I think. Just a thought what do ya'll think.

A lot of hot rod and street rod guys take the door handles off their rides and replace them with an electric seloniod to open the door. It lets you have clean lines down the side of your rig as well as (and this is just my opinion) a little more security. Of course you need to install a cable somewhere out of sight just in case you lose power and the selonoid fails.

Has anyone thought about or tried one on an older coach.

I have shaved handles on my 4106, I can't take credit for it though, the previous owner / builder put it in.
I have to admit it is pretty slick, I havn't taken the door apart to look yet, but he said that he used a GM trunk release mechanism. There is a button next to the door that looks like a door bell to activate the unit.

How do lock it Jim? With an electric one it's no problem but how does yours work?

I'm going that route w/my Jetliner. I liked the air door but had concerns for how to lock it when the air is gone or when I'm parked. I did not want to install latch mechanisms with handles since it will have to unlock swiftly when I hit the door button to open. Will use 2 solenoids with cam mechanisms under the door frame and tie them into the electrical part of the air-override built in. Now all I have to do is build all this.

Only one problem, you should have some sort of manual over-ride, unless you want to be locked out of your coach one day, maybe in the middle of the night if the solenoid fails.

Of course it will be the middle of the night when it fails... Or it will be pouring rain or any of a number (or combination) of "Murphy's Law" scenerios. It least that is my experience.

It is raining--3 days now and at least 1 more to go. Yes, I will provide for a purely mechanical over-ride of the electric latches. The air door has wedge bars that engage when it closes under air pressure--the door lifts about 1" once it is in the closed position. Then, as it opens it lowers before swinging open. There is the problem w/ the air, or lack of air more precisely. The door is in an unlatched position without air pressure. I'm also considering just keeping the air system as is and merely hooking air supply from the aux. air compressor I installed. That may prove to be just as effective and simpler to do but then I have to leave the aux. compressor on-line while parked. Oh, all these decisions and in the midst of a downpour. My ideas are getting soggy!

My '48 Flxible Clipper has a hidden opener from the factory. The Clipper style dates back to the streamlined era of the late thirtys. Maybe that's where the hot rodders saw it first.

Lorna,

"could be worse, could be raining"

Loved that movie, still a classic. Thanks for the reference.

Had a bus man tell me to just remove the handle and then carry it in the bus, when you need to open it you can insert the handle and volia your in. Wife smiled and said yes, and you will lay it down and forget where you put it and ask me to find it hehehe
