Hello Everyone
Thank you Ian!
Well I've been sitting back reading all the subjects, comments, rescue's and the list goes on. I've noticed there are alot of Hazelnuts, Walnuts, Acorns, Almonds, Pistachios, Cashews, Peanuts and alot of Busnuts on this site. So I emailed the Mighty Nut and asked him if I could join this group of Trail Mix and here I am.
In about 2 weeks I am heading down from Oregon to pick up my 4107 in Calif. just wish I would have done it when the Alaskan couple did their trip, it's not too far from where they broke down.
Good Morning Everyone, have a great day.

Sam, I promise, (with reservations), that you won't have a horrible accident.
I won't promise that you won't have a nasty stinky accident.

I was referring to you being doomed by the fact that you'll never get the GMC off your back!

haha!! Welcome! Ive already "heard" about you :-) I remember the pics of your bus too! It seems you got a pretty sweet deal there! Are you going to be going back my way? Thru 395? Im supposed to be going to Lancaster next week, though now that "might" be delayed.... maybe I could time it just right and get a tour of your new bus and there is supposed to be someone else down that way too....

Hi Teresa
You know I've been looking at the map on which way to go back, 395 north, 15 east to Vegas then up, I-5 yuk,but probably do the 395. I'll let you know when I head down and stop by if your there, Bill the PO, was telling me that NASA owned it first then a tenneesee football team. When he was stripping out the seats and walls to insulate and wire, he found 1/4 inch copper sheeting in the walls, had to be something NASA ordered to hid their little green men. So if I show up at night it just might be glowing green...

Sam;
Welcome to the land of ODD,

If you will get on board, please watch your step, sit back and be amazed with the rest of us, and hopefully your appendages will hold air for the whole ride unlike a lot of ours!!!

Enjoy the Ride and remember it is about the Journey!!!

Bwahahahaha...SUCKER!!! Just kidding; welcome to the group. You are off to a great start with the best brand and one of the best models out there. BTW, if your coach doesn't already have it, you should definitely add the rear stabilizer bar from a 4905. Power steering? If so, make sure to have a couple of degrees of negative caster added to the front axle to improve tracking and reduce wander and constant steering correction. After, getting rid of any play in the steering, of course.

There's two things I'm wondering here, How does a name like Gomer fit in down in Florida, maybe back woods Blue Mtns and I can make out the Wild on the side of your bus but what does the first part say. Second thought don't tell me, might ruin the fun..
Thank Gomer!

Sam,
First off, welcome.
Secondly we don't want a repeat of what just happened where a bus wasn't what it was represented to be. Had you posted a question previously about "thinking of buying a buffalo in wherever," "anybody around there want to take an impartial look?" you would probably have gotten an offer or two.

We don't know whether or not you have taken a good long test drive in your bus, or whether you know the buyer, but several of us have given advice for years about don't fly to buy a bus sight unseen with a one way ticket, planning to buy it and drive it home!
When you do that, the pressure is on you to complete the sale, as you don't have an easy way home, and you don't want to be disappointed, but being broken down at the side of the road is a big disappointment, not to mention finding out that the water heater and refrigerator don't work.

Sorry to maybe rain on your campfire, but this IS a 44 year old bus, (about the average age of most of ours) so please tell us your arrangements, etc, so that we can work on your story having a happy ending!

Ok First thing is I am from WEST VIRGINIA LOL
Second is Jokers Wild which has been removed. I had to paint over it because it was in Bad shape as you could see. Now the fun! I have sang Gospel Music for many years and can you imagine pulling in a church with JOKERS WILD written on the side?? No singing tonite lol I was given the nickname from a man I worked for learning body work because he couldn't believe I sang like that. I was able to lead him to the Lord thru that tho. I am a blest man.

Hello George, thank you!
As Dallas said at the very beginning, I'm Doomed. I have always bought old classics, makes for more stories when it comes time to explain yourself and why in the world would you do that when your showing off your shiny apple when others see lemons. The trip home, well it has to be done sometime and I plan on having my chase vechicle with my tools, I will let you know when I'm headed to get it,that way you wont be arouund phone or internet. Something I've wanted for quite some time, at least its alot younger than I am.

Thanks George, 1967 with a manual trans but a automatic is included with the package but I'll keep it a stick for now. It's in a partial stage right now of conversion, which is great with me, I might reconfiqure the inside. All tanks and plumbing is in place, wiring and the generator.

Thanks Mike, I guess what your saying is this is a sorry bunch who see the beauty in doing odd things during odd times.

So after reading George T's posting last night I realized it would be nice to have someone pre look at the bus before I get there. I have been on the sidelines here for a month and a half trying to figure how to join and finally got thru to Ian and he fixed me up. The Bus is located in Hesperia, CA and I'm trying to pick it up around June 1st, I will be driving down and hopefully delivering two aluminum tanks to Kevin for his vegtable oil conversion. If anyone is close by Hesperia that could take a look at the bus for me and tell me before I leave, bring a Wrecker not your Durango that would be great or bring a double lowbow and pick the one up in Arizona too. Thank you everyone for the Welcomes!

I would be glad to go take pics and stuff, maybe the PO would be kind enough to drive it with me in it so I could hear the engine run and watch how the temp and oil pressure and air behave? And check out the tires, etc..

Major mispoke...add a couple degrees of POSITIVE caster. That will allow it to track much better. Negative caster allows it to steer easier with manual steering at the cost of wander on the road. This goes for all coaches of all brands. After play issues are resolved.

Welcome Sam
As I know from experiance there are alot of pitfalls when buying something so far from home. I bought my bus in CA also and I live in PA. George Todd was kind enough to check it out and help me prepare it for the trip. However looking back and knowing what I know now I don't think I would have attempted that trip! So just be very careful it could get very expensive and very frustrating. I luckly made it to tenn before I lost a wheel. Had to rent a car 1 way to get home $$. Then had to go back several weeks later to pick up. The shop took good care of me there but I got lucky. I think with fuel a few tires meals hotels rental cars airline tix repairs and parts I probably spent in the neighborhood of $5000.00 and I think I got lucky.

With all that said I hope not to scare you, Good Luck and Welcome!

Thanks BIll,
I went with the 67' 4107 but still there is a 74 flexible that I almost went with, $4000, just sitting there complete conversion just waiting a few miles away from me. I've been reading the post here for a month or so now and getting educated by the day.

I was fortunate in having a friend that runs charters up here, he kindly went along and climbed into, over, under and thru the bus before giving me the thumbs up, interestingly enough, that was 8 years before I knew any of these bus sites existed but I was no rookie to this, I've been piling sawdust most of my life as a hobby and had made messes in more than one rv but I was always impressed with the buses, my first one was a 1936 chevy school bus that was a little short thing with the headlights up on the fenders,, yes I not only rode the short bus, I also drove it and used it for fishing trips lol. When I bought my iggle it was stripped out completely, right to the lack of a floor and not even bottoms in the bays,, I could walk along the crossers and admire the tires from up above, I've even got a rock chip on the inside of my windshield from my steer tire flinging one past my ear.

Hey Sam,

I'm sorry I hadn't seen your post before this morning. While I have been able to do all the basic maintenance and even some repairs on my trusty '04, I am not a diesel mechanic per se.

That said, I would be happy to have a look at your coach and it is not very far from me. I have owned mine for over 10 years and am pretty familiar with the sounds they make, how they should shift and run down the road, etc. Let me know, it would be my pleasure!

Also, since it looks like you may be able to bring my tanks down with you (fingers & toes crossed!!!) if you will please let me know a day or two before you leave so that I can alert the gentleman in Oregon City that you will be visiting, that would be great!

Okay, just let me know.

Here's RJ's report on my bus:

According to my GMC Parlor Coach delivery roster, PD4107-722 was delivered new as fleet number 120 in April of 1967 to Alaska Hyway Tours, based out of Anchorage, AK. AHT was the Gray Line franchisee at the time. A little Google search turns up that this company may not have survived after 1970, if so, then perhaps your coach did come back to the Lower 48 and it's 2nd owner.
Now here's the ebay description from April 29, 2003:
New Brakes, New Clutch, New Tires, New Batteries, 65K opn rebuilt motor, 340,000k total chassis miles.
We are selling our 1967 4107 GMC in order to purchase a larger bus to meet our demands of our school. This bus has only been used as a school charter bus since 1982. The previous owner was Boeing Aircraft out of Seattle. They sold it with 44,000 miles on it. blah blah blah on contact info.
So it wasn't a space ship from NASA after all but maybe it has modifications that run on jet fuel, forget the vegatable oil Kevin, Jet A all the way. I'm dropping my shell just for you JaCk with this one, Ghost Riders in the Sky.

I had to look dint I...

Sam, I bet yours was a Facilities Transport for employees used for everything from
remote parking to airport shuttle & from building to building depending on the time and the day.
Likely it was maintained better than most & driven for long periods by the same driver, both are in your favor.

Go listen to something...carefully !

If you like and know how to install a dayton wheel, it would not be a problem to use them. But it is a learning curve. NO need to change hubs.

Hello All,

Very straight, pretty coach! One (only) battle scar on right rear bay door (which are still available brand-new, but this one might even be straightened out).

Started (cold) with barely half-revolution and no smoke, very smooth. Sounds good. Oil pressure gauge in engine compartment showed 20+ pounds cold. No (working) OP gauge in instrument panel. Equipped with working fast idle solenoid.

Air pressure (from completely flat) up in normal (within 5 minutes) time and held fine. Equipped with air (spring?) parking brake system. Parking brake valve (knob) leaked a bit of air when service brakes applied until I "wiggled", then no more.

Test drove. Odd clutch pedal feel (compared to my '04) as clutch pedal pressure seemed excessive at first application, but then dropped suddenly to floor with no effort... as if almost caught up... to a certain point... then past and BAM straight to floor. Shifting was fine... pretty much identical to my '04. Did miss a shift or two, but only because this coach is very quiet compared to mine while running down the road... difficult to determine engine speed (tach is not currently working). Still, quiet is a plus, I'm pretty sure!

Little wandering and slight shimmy noticed at speed, like 60 mph or so... guessing because of old-ass 20" bias-ply tube-type tires. Tires look excellent. Absolutely no checking/cracking/dryrot. Fronts are steers, rears are drive. Fronts match/rears match. Could not find DOT date stamp, but guessing late 90's, early 00's. PO (Bill, nice guy) says spare is behind front bumper, GM style.

Big injectors. Lots of smoke if pressed hard, but black - fuel as opposed to white - oil smoke, so good, but apply throttle carefully.

On way back from test drive noticed "hot brakes" smell. As I backed into Bill's driveway he noticed that passenger side rear brake was overheated. Bill crawled under bus (Eeeek! I told him that was not a good idea without first blocking bus!!!) and said that the brake shoe return spring appeared to be missing. He said he will get a replacement spring, install and test drive to make sure all is well.

Overall: Bus is pretty beautiful and straight. I would tend to believe the low mileage claims because bus is so pretty. Started immediately from dead-cold with no smoke. Very smooth and quiet. Weird clutch pedal feel, but engaged smoothly and surely with no slip. Bus feels big and heavy compared to my beloved 4104. '04 seems somewhat nimble in comparison. Hey Sam, wanna drag race?! Heh, heh!

Some wandering (pretty typical of these coaches, including mine) and a bit of "shimmy" which I believe modern radial tires would help immensly.

For the price, Sam... I think you did very well!

Hey Sam,

Not sure about the tach connection question. Upshifting is as easy as running the engine up to the governor prior to each upshift. Downshifting is a bit trickier. One must synchronize engine/trans speeds and with a coach as quiet as yours, it was a little harder to do, but doable! You'll be a pro after a few hundred shifts! lol!!!

By the way, Bill showed me some wires (disconnected) back near the alternator that he was pretty sure are from the tach. He wasn't sure how to connect them to the alternator. It may be as simple as connecting those wires correctly in order to get tachometer function.

I sent you an email that has a bit more detail on your new coach. In it I suggest that you purchase a couple each of new fuel filters for the ride home. My coach sat for about a year before I bought it and I had to change the filters quite a few times 'til the tank was pretty well flushed out by fresh fuel - just by driving, I mean.

Also, you'll want to use Delo 100 straight 40 w oil... no multi-viscosity oil. Delo has the correct ash level content recommended by DD.
