I will share my story of my clutch repair at Clarke Power Services in Jackson, MS. First, they are a first class, friendly operation. They are, however, 500 miles from me. I did go pick up my bus yesterday morning after driving all day Sunday in my Jeep to get there. As an aside, we have a cabin on Shoal Creek just a mile or two south of Joplin, and we spent the night there Saturday night. We left there on Sunday morning so I could get an early start from Springfield to Jackson, MS....I called my old Dad in Omaha and told him "what a beautiful morning it is here, today". Then, when I got to Jackson, a friend called to ask how we were and if the weather had hit Springfield (60 miles east of Joplin). I did not know what he was talking about and he filled me in. My thoughts and prayers, as well as a few bucks to the Red Cross go out to these poor folks. You absolutely can not fathom the devistation. Death count now 116. If any of you had ever stopped at the Joplin Flying J, that is now reduced to one walk in cooler. No other evidence other than the slab. Semi trailers were lifted from I-44 and slammed down 100' away with no skid or track marks. Don't mess with these things. Anyway, back to the clutch. Total: $4,700. 25 hours of shop time @ $110 (buses and RV's are highest on the pay scale, probably because they are not that easy to work on). $100 for the flywheel machine service. $862 for the rebuilt clutch from Jefferson and $270 to ship it overnight. Throw out was $95. The release shaft had no splines and I got one from Luke as well as a release lever. Needed bushings that came from Volvo and the release shaft modified for them to work ($52). The guy set the clutch fingers per the book, even though he pointed out to me that the book says "a new clutch should need no adjustment". I assume that was written in 1963 when you got a new clutch from GM. Clutch works great although I am needing to make some adjustment to get the "engagment" action happening earlier in the pedal release. It is very close the top of the pedal release. I need to check the "wheel" as it may have backed off. Anyway, although this hurt like all get out, I cannot complain other than it appears MS charges sales taxes on labor. |

It is hard to imagine the total devastation these people are dealing with. If you can do anything to assist the disaster aid groups, this would be the time. Red Cross, your church's relief and even Joplin Animal Shelter (their building survived but resources are overrun with the number of domestic animals left homeless). now more people dead last night in OK. Prayer for the survivors as they try to reassemble their lives... Here are some more ideas : http://www.news-leader.com/article/20110523/NEWS01/105230356 |
