Hey folks... I just found out that some good friends of the family just lost everything in one of the Oklahoma tornados. They were bird breeders and ran a very humane operation with large flights and all hands-on (unlike "mill" operations). I don't know exactly how many birds they had, but I'm guessing at least 3000. So far, only 6 of them have been found. Interestingly enough, one is the sister to one of the birds we lost in the fire. They lived on farmland, had a nice large barn and are very good people. We can't establish reliable communication with them at the moment, but so far it looks like they and their family made it through the tornado. Their neighbor had a storm cellar, which everyone escaped to just moments before the twister destroyed everything. I'll update again when I know more... Ugh. Always something!!! -Mac |

Hey guys... Thanks, Marv. We're still waiting for news, looks like all communications for the area have been severed. We can't get in contact with them again. I'm considering the possibility of getting my old Flx running again and see if the old girl would make it up there. It wouldn't be much, but it would at least give them a temporary place to stay on-site while assessment of the damages is underway, as well as a place to house what few animals remain alive. I'm just not sure the old girl would make it there. She barely made it here from SD and I haven't been able to put anything at all into her since I'm still looking for reliable employment... Odd contract jobs just don't have enough money flow to do much of anything. Do any of you have friends/family in the areas that have been hit with the recent natural disasters? Anyway... I'll post again soon. -Mac |

I've talked to some friends in the kansas area and from what I understand is that many don't have any protection for storms of this kind and depend on hoping to get to a storm shelter of some sort in the area they live in, I know that kansas is in the tornado belt and wouldn't it make some kind of sence from a personal safety point to have something like that? One guy told me that back years ago many of the family farms had root cellars that they would go to for protection, I don't know how much protection that offered but it makes sence to me that something is better than nothing,, a person can always rebuild but when lives are lost thats a permanent hurt. I'm wondering how many have some sort of storm shelter, what they cost, and how available they would be, just seems with the huge loss of life from recent storms it would be a thought, I know in this area we don't get the terrible storms of that kind but we get other life threatening storms and we spend time and money on what is needed to survive them. I don't mean to rub salt into the deep wounds left after a tornado devestates a town but isn't there something that can be done to better protect the lives in those towns? Up here it's up to each one of us to look out for ourselves,, I'm sure it's the same in other places, but what can be done or is being done? |

I knew a guy who took a 40 ft truck trailer, and burried it for a storm shelter, He had it for years I know of. could it be done with a bus conversion that is no longer road worthy, would be great for riding out storms, or even hiding from the neighbors, JUST A THOUGHT. NOW have fun with this Idea....... |

Hey Bill, I have kicked around that idea for some time now, but being a trucker I knew that the superstructure of a "van type" trailer would not provide very strong support, so I have opted for a 20' sea storage container. Much stronger and that should be big enough for me to run too when Barb goes on the warpath. The only difference I see between a "man cave" and a storm shelter is the type of devestation you are shielding yourself from. John |

Special precautions should be made before burying a container in ground. There are many places around the web that say the walls and roof are weak and will eventually cave in. They say the strength is in the corners. http://www.runkleconsulting.com/Shipping%20Container%20Houses/ShippingContainerHouseEngine ering.htm As for burying a school bus, this guy is doing a BUNCH of them in concrete for a major bomb sheter for a village. The pics on the site are incredible. http://www.radmeters4u.com/arktwo/photoconstruct/photocon.htm This guy and some others have made shipping containers into swimming pools inground. And currently I am working with an archetic on designing one for my yard. It is about 20% or even wayyy less to do it then to install a regular pool. It is short lived though as the pool liner has to be replaced every 10-25 years, but that's okay with me cuz it is mainly for my son who needs it for physical therapy and in that long of time he will probably have a family of his own and moved as far away from his busy body mom as he can get lol But my archetec thinks this can be done by coating the container with truck bedlining paint and then sinking it in the ground and shoring up the sides with gabions (which are wire baskets with rocks in them, they are used for errosion and stuff).. http://renaissanceronin.wordpress.com/2009/11/20/im-in-the-hole-and-its-wet-in-here/ |
