...all cans are sprayed with a plastic "liner"
it's so thin you cannot see it.
There's even warnings about Green Beans & Tomato products,
the acids leach into the plastic & rust the can
plus a chemical in the plastic leaches into the food in those 2 in particular.
FWIW..
the aluminum water dish for the cats gets rinsed & filled every other day. Seldom does it get a "wash".
The water in Stinkin Hot is so full of mineral that there are White crystalline deposits forming on the aluminum & from experience I know it's only a matter of time before those deposit's roots break thru to the outside.

I've suggested to Fooey that he use an Epoxy, we have the perfect weather for baking the hell out of it
so it ought to be free of stink after a couple of rinses.

Powdercoat would be perfect but there no way to do an inside & get it 100% guaranteed perfect.

I seem to recall an Epoxy being advertised in FMCA Mag or the like, years ago. Like gas tank sealer only inert.
I assume Fooey Googled that before he came here.

BRAT- I've tried that tool (You must imediately give it to me) before here on a split door window for an '06.
If you wanna play in this sandbox, you're gonna have to get original material &
work your own side of the street... Honey!
:-)

this tank is oxidizing and I don't feel good about drinking from it. for what it's worth I don't own anything aluminium that touches consumables. glass cast iron or stainless only. small neurosis.

George that is very wise. On a serious note (thats for Jack); My Mom who died many years ago from Alzheimers was told that Drinking or eating from Aluminum or even cooking in pans made of it contribute to the disease which they now know for sure. Don't remember what it was about it but they said stay away from it for those purposes.

No Jack, don't send it to her to cook in it for me, Won't work either.

I discovered this product which seems like it could be good for sealing up a tank, or at least I hope so since I'm welding up my own..

Considering I just ordered from Ronco Plastics my water tanks- 210gal fresh, 141gal gray, 60gal black for about $1,100.00 including fittings, it's just not worth the time and effort to make your own. But-then everyone has their opinion. Good Luck, TomC

seriously...... lol "seriously" Im in the market for an alu fuel tank and a total leach So you got a buyer if you decided not to use it for water..... anywhoo..... now that I think about it, I stopped buying alu pots and pans years ago because of them being harmful in cooking. Wow, all this time I thought it was the heat that combined with the chemicals and did something bad to food... thanks for the lessons guys!

George.
Be careful what you use for epoxy on the tank!
Aluminum expands and contracts a lot due to temperature. Most epoxy doesn't and is soon compromised.
Anything that you line that tank with runs a high likelihood of failing around bulk heads.
The only way to be sure that you are not leaching aluminum is to not use aluminum tanks for potable water. Second best way is to have a drinking water system (not just filtration) for the 3% of the water that you actually consume.
DON'T dick with this my friend!
If you want to do it right give me a call (Jack has my number) and I will explain how to do it.

Hey Jack did you get it or are you still doing finger work?

Well as I said this is what the Doctors told us 14 years ago. And after reading your experts testi-money on the internet and saw a lot of many studies have been done but no references and the experts say??? Who are "they". No positive conclusions anywhere and even the Aleshiemer associations can not and will not say for sure.

These are the same people who told us smoking cigarettes were not harmful to our health many years ago so Mr. "Bird from the Ice" I would further say that I will not use aluminum for those por-poises for myself and anybody who would like to join me is welcome too.

PLASTIC PLASTIC!!! That is the only thing to use for drinking water. Use Plastic whenever and wherever you can including waste water because of the toxic fumes that are given off in a holding tank Whew, Glad wife wasn't here for this. LOL

my grey and black water tank are stainless but there is the beginning of porosity around the welds. Tom I am redoing this bus and if I can make my money stretch by buying me a couple of years with a lining product I have to go with it. maybe along the way a plastic tank deal will present itself when the time is right (penguin wisdom lesson) the product Julie suggested shows promise since it is flexible. as for the water that I will use for cooking and drinking that will by a separate set up isolated from my fresh water tank I am thinking 4 5gal water cooler bottles with it's own pump and plumbing to a dispenser by the kitchen sink Les I will call you.

I spoke to Mark at NA Powdercoating this morning.
He does no recommend doing the inside of any fresh/potable water tank
with powder coat.
New-used or otherwise.
Other Coating operations might have a specialty product for such a purpose
but he does not.
So much for that idea.

How did you say your welding is? Will this tank cause me to have a line of forest critters following me to Idaho lapping up french fry vo all the way? How do you test a tank to make sure it will hold hot stuff under pressure? My son informed me tonight that he would "never" trust my welding a fuel tank, so I cant be redoing it or he wont go with me in the bus. How many gallons is it? I'll get the dimensions of mine tomorrow.

Considering the cost and risks involved a replacement with proper plastic tanks might be better.

"How do you test a tank to make sure it will hold hot stuff under pressure? "

I would set up a pressure guage on a tank cap and give it a mild pressure test 5-10 lbs MAX If it don't leak then Good to go.

The US CG requires testing of fuel tanks on an y boat that carries over 6 folks.

They require MAX 5psi , the tank can deform (and usually does) but not leak.

To pressurize the tank an 11ft long hose is filled with a funnel.

The diameter of the hose does not matter , only the 11ft from the top of the tank.
