Hello Great Ones: I travel pretty close to full time and depend on my Eagle O-1 to transport my family and myself across the country. In fact up to this year we have been total full timers for the last five years. I have a traveling ministry and try to be the best steward of my money as possible. I am not cheap when it comes to buying parts, but practicle as I can be. I had a brand new (not rebuilt) motor installed last year but they used the air compressor that was on the old motor. It lasted us the last five years until my wife and myself were coming back to Mississippi on our 22nd anniversary. The air compressor went out in the middle of town. You don't want to hear the rest of that story, at least in this post. It would shock some of you newbies. So I'm sending this post to any one with some sound counsel. Question: Should I look for another used or new air compressor? Or, is it advisable to remove ours and have it rebuilt? I have many commitments to fulfill and need our bus running soon. We are located in Mississippi. I will be removing it myself and installing it. Another question: Is this a hard job to do? It is not a belt drive. My engine is a 8V-71. Thanks, RonR. |

You should be able to get a rebuilt exchange at most truck parts stores. My guess on price is 175, if u have a usable core there. Freightliner dealer here had rebuilt 12CFM Bendix units on sale a couple of years ago, $10 less than the core value. Several of us changed compressors just to make the $10.00. Got a fresh rebuild to boot. |

number one thing to find out ...is it the air comp...the d-2 air govener should be removed every year ,cleaned with liquid wrench, bad o-rings replaced ,and re-assembled 'exactly' as is was disasembled.....that said....if the compressor IS out, a rebuilt unit is fine, the d-2 air govener is an external device that looks kinda like a rocket ship & about the size of a pack of cigarettes.....if you can change a tire, you can replace an air comp.....hope this is the info you wanted.. .....TWO DOGS..... |

Ron, As stated before, get a rebuilt one from a truck supply. One with a warranty which is country wide would be helpful too. You can send me your story of woe, I am tough enough to take it...... LOL. Just click on my name above. Peter. |

Rebuilt air compressor, that's the way to go, no doubts. TwoD's advice about the governor is sound, especially in the context of a conversion...though governors aren't all that expensive... Still, without question, if you service the governor his way every year, you may NEVER need a another. Brian |

Ron, where in Mississippi? I am in Pascagoula. I just this week finished rebuilding my compressor and governor. I also have the 8v71. Total cost for rings, bearings, gaskets, springs etc. was about 80 dollars. The unit is extremely simple and has very few moving parts. I order all my parts thru Mohawk and have received outstanding service. I do all my own work, but that is just me. Tim RTS #589 |

The nice thing about a rebuilt part: if it fails right away you can tear it off and return it, no matter how bad the failure. If you make a mistake (being human) while rebuilding a part and it fails, you get to reorder a bunch of parts to re-rebuild it...if you can...But if you can't, then you have to buy a rebuilt PLUS the core charge. Thank you guys. This is not going to be as big a challenge as I thought. You put my mind at ease. Tim, I'm in Natchez. Thanks again, Ron |
