My Church is looking to buy a coach. I have looked at a '78 MC-8 and '80 MC-9. Are the MCI buses better than the Prevost for ease of maintenance, durability etc.??

We had a truck shop look at the '78 MC-8 with 8-71 and auto trans. and they gave me a list of things as follows:

Rear tourqe arm bushing worn
fitting left side and above trans. leaking
PS pump leaks
both head gaskets leak oil
RR wheel bearing loose
LF kingpin little loose
LF wheel bearing a little loose?
fuel pump leaks oil
oil in right side exhaust
oil in RF steering hub is black
needs to be greased
metal chips in differential

The interior of this bus is very good, some dings in the lower sheetmetal around baggage compartments, rear bumper has a bit of a curve in it. asking price is $9200

Any advice, comments etc. greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Bob

With oil in right side exhaust I dont think I would mess with it.Could need a overhaul right now.And with metal chips in differential you know it is going to have to be rebuilded.

As a diesel mechanic with a quarter century in the industry with the listed problems, especially the differential metal, I would advise you against the MC-8.

With the flood of MC-9's 96A3's & 102A3's on the market right now I believe if you are willing to go further afield (including the internet) you ought to be able to find a YEARS newer coach for similar money, in better condition.

Thanks for the reponse guys, so far all of the coaches I have been able to find are about $15,000-20,000 for early to mid '80's, is this about right?

You should be able to find an ex-NJ Transit in good shape for less than that.

Mid 80's, 20k, it best be in good shape and the owner able to prove it.

Does anyone know anything about the Eagle M-20, parts availability etc., how do they compare to the MCI line?

Parts are still ok, the ride is smoother, the rust mellows them out.

Parts avialability is excellent for the MCI's. MC-8s are a great bus, but the one you have described sounds overpriced for the condition you have described. Repairs to bring it up to good condition could most likely be much more than the difference in price for this bus and a newer one in better shape.
