I have a chance on buying one or more 90-91 champion buses that run on GNG engines look like cat six cylinders w/ 4 speed atomatics. How expensive/difficult is it to convert back to diesel?? |

narrow it down to EXACTLY which engine is in the bus... then maybe we can help....otherwise we're all just guessing... |

These buses are probably not worth the effort. You can get a pretty decent diesel powered bus for what it would cost to find, a good diesel engine, fuel tank, filters, hoses etc. This says nothing about your time commitment to do a conversion. You are out of time and without knowledge. Bad buying combination. |

CNG engines only last a fraction of the service life of a diesel engine. The engines are probably worn out if they are original. Otto (gasoline) cycle engines run on propane, on the other hand, last a lot longer than the same engine run on gasoline. Converting from propane to gasoline is a matter of fitting a fuel injection system, or even easier a carburetor. |

The BIG problem with CNG for a diesel engine, is the fact that diesel fuel has lubricating properties that CNG does not, this relates to cylinder/ring wear. Conversely the one BIG advantage that CNG has over diesel fuel is unburnt fuel, the high amount of ash in unburnt diesel fuel is what makes diesel motor oil so black. CNG burns with no ash residue. The ash in the unburn diesel fuel contains acids as well as other detrimental elements that contribute to the degradation of the motor oil. A diesel engine running on CNG will be running in very clean motor oil allowing a longer maintenance interval for CNG burning diesel engines. The BIG problem with CNG for the driver, is lack of power... Brian |
