My TU-FLO 500 compressor over heated and the rings lost their 'spring' and are not sealing. I have all the rebuild parts for the top end including the off-loader valve. Seems it shouldn't be too hard to replace the rings (and save at least $350). Any body ever bin-thar-dun-that? Or what do you think? Thanks, joe 4106

Go for it-- if the rebuild doesn't work out you can exchange it later.

Well, that sounds okay to me, but I wonder, WHY did it overheat?

Air leaks?

Blocked cooling passages?

Bad governor?

You need to repair that problem as well, or the rebuild won't last.

Brian: Possibly 40 yrs. old, could that have anything to do with it?

Joe, just rebuilt my 700 two weeks ago.
The ring set came with very comprehensive instructions.
Pistons should be stamped on top if oversize, make sure you order correct ring size.
Made a ring compressor out of .020 or so metal 1 inch wide.

The unit overheated due to a blocked cooling passage (between the comp head and block). I ran a coolant line connecting the two and ordered top end parts.

Tim, did you also take apart/repair the bottom end (connecting rod caps, crank bearings, & seals)? What did the set of rings cost?

Thanks, Joe

Joe, Took the whole thing apart. Replaced con rod bearings, rings, unloaders, etc. Everything but crank and pistons. My crank rides in plain bushings, did not replace them.
Rings were $24.

Tim
