My 4104 has started to surge at idle up and down by a couple hundred rpm gets better as it warms but does not even out. BTW FMCA is having a convention in Albuquerque, acres and acres of beautiful coaches factory and owner conversions, it is a sight to see if your are in the area

Hey Bob,
My 3751 (671) does the same thing, sept when it gets warm it pretty well stops. It also idles a little higher when warm. They've been telling me I need a tune up but I haven't the time to do it yet.

If it just started I would say you have an injector that is starting to stick-- be carefull, it could lock up on you and cause a "runaway engine". What you need to do is have an experienced Detroit mechanic check out your rack and any binding by an injector.

It also could be an adjustment of the buffer screw. This screw when turned can make the engine have a roll,at idle. you need someone to turn it that knows what they are doing as if turned to much can let the engine run away on you. Its on the govenor.

Run away engine meaning that you can't shut down with the kill switch right? But it will shut down with the emergency kill right?

Well that's the theory Nick, but in practice it's best to catch a DD QUICK.

DD's have been known to suck in blower seals and keep right on screaming.

That is not to say that the emergency shut-off is useless...

But the faster you use it in that situation the better off you are, all the way around.

Bob
You might want to check your emergency shut down just in case. Check it with the engine OFF and see if the solenoid works and the flapper falls. The rod that is attached to the flapper is steel and the housing is aluminum. They corrode very easily and don't work. I had this problem years ago and after I freed it up I drilled a small hole in the aluminum housing at each end of the steel shaft for oil to be squirted in and I have never had it seize up since. I presume the 4104 uses the same set up as the 6&8V71. Just food for thought. Bill

In my experience the #1 reason for engine surge at idle is a dirty fuel filter.
#2 is idle set too low for governor to control.
