Would adding two more 6 volt batteries bring down the other two? They are all good but about 10 months apart in age. |

It generally is a good thing to replace batteries as a group, as a rule our shop does it. ...but my personal opinion... so long as your other pair is still fairly new, and in good shape, you should be fine. Brian |

In the short run, it will probably be fine. Batterys in battery banks are usually kept near the same age for efficeincy porposes. I have seen two senarios occure with odd dated batteries... 1___with odd dated batteries, the older may fail or short inside creating a problem on the bank, this could be the battery cell shorting inside or the cell opening inside. Also, the chemical reaction inside an older cell becomes much less active, causing problems for the newer cells by forcing a higher charge rate based on the older cells. 2__The Other side of the coin is good experience, but that is with lots of maintenance to make sure all cells are operational, good electrolite readings and good cell voltage readings. With age mismatched batteries, you need to pay a bit more attention to them then if they were all the same age. Personally, the battery needs attention for maintenance anyway so I would probably be willing to try it. The other side of the thought is, if the older bank goes back, you can cut it out and the newer bank should be able to pull you through. but remember, you will have to keep an eye on them more than normal if you mismatch the cells ages. I'm not saying its never been done, circumstances sometimes make it a necesity, I am saying that if you do mix cell ages, that you need to keep an eye on them, especially as they grow older. 10 months old is hardyly Old. Your new ones could short out also and ruin the "old" perfectly good ones. All kinds of things to imagine here, if u want to let your mind run loose. Basically, not a problem. I suppose people with more money than ---------- throw away perfectly good and serviceable batteries, but I don't know of anyone else that does. |
