I recently changed the driver's seat in my MC-8 and mounted the new one on the same base as the original. This new seat is thicker than the original. The base has a manual height adjustment. This appears to be some type of ratchet arrangement. It is stuck in the fully raised position and neither of my MCI manuals include the section on the driver's seat. I'd like to keep this base. Does anyone have any details (before I tear it apart) on this type of base?

Hello DaveD

Does your seat pedestal have a lever mounted in the side a couple of inches above the floor, (right side facing forward is conventional) or is it smooth sides all the way up?

Either way, part of the solution involves lots of your favourite penetrating spray on the vertical post, so choose the residual smell that you and spouse will prefer...

If you have the lever, in proper operation, from a seated position, one puts the heel on the lever, pushing it down, while one firmly graps the sides of the chair and gives it a tug upwards to lift it out of the detent on the vertical seat post, then it thunders to the lowest setting.

If you have no lever, the seat has to be hauled all the way to the top, then it thunders all the way to the floor.

Both of these beasts were part of the occupational conspiracy against bus drivers' backs, along with luggage holds, clutch mechanisms, manual steering, long hours in a seated position....

You will find that a small jack will be a better solution than using your own back, to get your seat post free. Once free, work it up and down a lot to prevent a speedy return to stuck.

happy coaching!

Thanks. I'll try a jack.

When I had trouble moving the seat UP/Down, I found the trouble was the seat was moved all the way aft, touching the bulkhead behind it and interferrng with the up/down movement. Make sure the seat is forward and then try the up/down movement. MC-9
