Hey guys I'm thinking Cloudcroft, New Mexico to cool off. It's 8600' above sea level, looks affordable, and it is closest to Zapata, Texas that I can find.....any other ideas ??? |

Visited there in December of 2009, used the jeep not the bus. If go up on the N.M. (Alamagordo) side like we did it is a real pull. Not much up there, you need to come down to Alamagordo to shop. What toad do you have? I think 3000-3600ft. raise in 6mi. On the way down 2 or 3 truck runoffs, great views with some pulloffs. |

I'll be taking the Eagle up to Cloudcroft Aug 1 for two weeks working at Aspendale Camp with the volunteer builders. I can't wait to get out of this 100 degree south TX heat. David (Message edited by davidanderson on July 10, 2011) |

FYI.Lincoln National Forest is CLOSED to all activities...etc etc, except on private land (ASPENDALE, et al). A phone call to the Forest Service in Alamo confirmed that on Thursday last. I would have been there long ago, but for that...and that extends all the way north to beyond Ruidoso. We usually spend a week or so around the 4th in that area...not so this year. Check the Linclon National Forest Web site for the latest...Best wishes. BTW...try 9000 ft above sea level. FWIW RCB (Message edited by chuckllb on July 10, 2011) |

Nice area, we were there last fall for about a week. This time of the year, it is difficult to find any place that is cool. DS |

Stepped off the aircraft today in Dallas and it is like walking into an oven. 100F and sure is uncomfortable for a prairie boy used to a typical Alberta summer. |

The COOL little secret of Southern AZ is the mining town of BISBEE. (Pop. 6000) It WAS America's LARGEST city West of the Mighty Mississip until San Francisco rebuilt after the big shake. Bisbee is always cooler than any surrounding Burg and it is home to several Micro-Breweries. It is a town whose motto is "Mind your own business & we'll mind our's" fwiw

You might try Pie Town. It's tiny but up high.. very high (7500). David says Jackson Park, the free city campground up there (no hookups, water is seasonal April - October) is very nice with big trees. I don't believe him because I have seen very few big trees in Socorro (county and city). Just lots of dust and gravel. We will have to go up there before we leave Socorro so I can see the trees and have some PIE! http://www.pietown.com/ http://halfmoonhitch.vpweb.com/ private campground with full hookups |

David...no disrespect intended ....Pie Town is a very narrow wide, spot in the road across New Mexico's western plains. Sure, altitude may be 7,000 feet, but definitely not what I, as a New Mexican ( ) would call a "cool" spot. If one were going to venture that distance in the state, and could not be accommodated in the Cloudcroft/Ruidoso area (BTW, as late as yesterday afternoon, the Lincoln National Forest is still closed to all activities)I would head for Chama area, possibly Angle Fire or Red River. Just FWIW....ho criticism ...just "experience". Best wishes, RCB |

thanks for all the come backs guys, I'm going to CloudCroft, if the air is too thin I'm headed to Ruidoso. Plan on leaving next week-end. Again thank you. |

RCB... You do know that there is STILL a fire going Northwest of Albuquerque? We had a nice view of the smoke on Friday when we were up in ABQ. BTW, David doesn't post. Just me... Lorna |

Roy..a number of pretty nice looking campgrounds (private)in Ruidoso...never stayed at any of them, but they're inviting from the road, at least. Cloudcroft area.... it should be much cooler there; Mayhill, a few miles east of Cloudcroft has a pretty nice RV facility...and, some running water (Creek) nearby. Lorna, yep, the fires are still burning up there, but last I checked El Vado lake area (Chama) was open. We're headed up to the Mora, Angel Fire, Raton area in a couple of weeks. Hope they are all out by then. Big losses in NM as well as AZ this year. Colorado not so much, I guess, but still more than are welcome. They do a LOT of "thinning" fires in that state, each year...or at least did when I lived there. FWIW RCB |
