Making a banzai run to Tucson, AZ this weekend, bringing my USAF son leftover "stuff" that he can take to his new home in Colorado Springs. After a 5 1/2 year stint in Germany, he's just finishing up a training class at Goodfellow AFB in San Angelo, TX, and Tuscon is a good meeting point for us both.

Since it's 12 hrs behind-the-wheel one way for me, no time to visit fellow busnuts along the way, sadly.

Routing is CA-99 > I-5 > I-210 > I-10.

My question for fellow busnuts: Do you know of a Costco or Sam's Club with fuel islands relatively close to the above freeways in the San Bernadino, Phoenix and Tucson areas? These stations are roughly 20 cents/gallon cheaper than most others, at least in my area, hopefully so in the above regions. (Gasoline for this trip, not diesel!)

I'm going to use both company's search engine for locations, but sometimes help from "the locals" can reduce wandering!

TIA!

:-)

PS: This is being cross-posted to BCM's BBS also.

Are you going to have time to stop and see Fooey and Jack? I need an expert eye for a real update, instead of those guys blowing smoke.... just sayin'!

RJ..., fwiw...the route you chose, to Tucson for both of you, might not be the best ( shortest). Co-Pilot shows a sizable difference, 200 + miles for you...and same for your son, as opposed to Flagstaff as a meeting point.

Perhaps I am not aware of.... or I've overlooked, something.

Food for thought....:-) :-) Specifics if you would like them.

Best regards,
RCB

RJ, try www.gasbuddy.com. They will have Costco and many others, with a map link. I use it for diesel prices when on the go. Have a good trip and thank your son for his service, we appreciate it.

Thanks, everyone, for your replies, they're appreciated. Will pass on the "thanks for your service" to Eric, also.

Mark -

I use gasbuddy often, have it bookmarked on my desktop. Thanks for reminding me. Just trying to do my homework before I leave. Won't be taking the laptop, just Blackberry 'n Genie.

RCB -

Google maps only shows a 2 mile difference between the Flagstaff route and the Tucson route, not sure how Co-Pilot came up with 200+. Interesting.

Tucson was chosen for another reason: Eric's chompin' at the bit for an In-N-Out cheeseburger "animal-style!" Hasn't had one since he left for Basic Training over six years ago, and since there isn't one in Flagstaff, but there are four in Tucson, it was a no-brainer!

Dallas -

Banzai run, no time to dawdle. F&F will have to continue to blow smoke your way for the time being. OTOH, should either or both show up at the HEI on Cracker Barrel between 4 - 6 pm on Saturday, observations shall be made and Pepsis consumed. At least until the Tech Sgt drags me off to In-N-Out!

Thanks again all!

:-)

Should have stated "round trip miles" for you... for your son not two hundred miles; but 135.

Fresno- Flagstaff=584
Fresno-Tucson=704

San Angelo-Tucson=718 + Colorado Springs= 1529
San Angelo-Flagstaff=795 + Colorado Springs=1394

And that is the end of the story...:-) :-)Best wishes for a safe...and enjoyable trip!

RJ, put Gas Buddy on your Blackberry... there's an App for that! That is, if that antique phone can handle apps other than a dial tone. Is it true it still has a rotary dial?

RCB -

I see now what you were planning, makes sense. I would have preferred Flagstaff, and that would have been the plan had it been two weeks later.

I didn't make it clear in my original post, but Eric's returning to San Angelo from Tucson for the last 10 days of this particular training class, then heading to Colorado Springs at the end of the month. For that jaunt, he's using a U-Haul pulling a car trailer w/ his 325 track car. So this was the narrow window where the "freight express" would work. Most likely, Dad will also spring for the In-N-Out, too.

Dallas -

Thanks for the tip, I'll go searching for gasbuddy's mobile app.

No rotary dial on the Berry, but does the track ball count?

Fids -

Ditto!

:-)

The concrete snake , known as I-10 squeezed ol RJ at about I-8,
After a 40 minute bout he regained forward progress.

All -

Banzai run completed, freight delivered.

Enjoyed a meal together with USAF son @ In-N-Out.

Had entertaining conversation w/ Fids while sitting still on I-10 just 2 miles from I-8 interchange EB due to construction delay.

2011 Ford Fusion rental returned 35 mpg @ 70 mph loaded to the gunwales. 36 mpg empty on return leg @ same velocity. (LOVED the Sirius XM radio!)

Thanks to GasBuddy.com, $3.559 @ Flying J on AZ side of river in Blythe ($3.899 on CA side). $3.219 @ Valero in Tucson across the street from In-N-Out by hotel off Cracker Barrel Rd. $3.579 @ Costco in Fresburg upon return.

Long haul, but best was visit w/ #1 (and only) son!

They moved Blythe across the state line into AZ.??? :>) I worked in Ehrenberg just below and behind the Flying J for 3 months during the summer of 2003....a little warm then.
