I had found an antenna that was supposed to be the antennas of all antenna. IT ISN'T! So now I am at a disadvantage, which leads to the question.... Has anyone had experience with those crank-up gull wing looking RV antennas? Do they work when they are down in the "travel" position? Do you need a signal amplifier? Now, If you haven't used one of these wonders, what do you use for a local vhf/uhv antenna? I tried looking in the archive, but it didn't come up with any hits. Thanks for your thought. Hello CD, yes they work in the down position if you are traveling thru town. Like most signals though when you get more than 10 miles away you will lose contact. Also they are very directional so if the bus is not pointed right then you don't get much of a signal. Of course you could always spring for the flat KVH tv antena that only cost $2,500 (I am not selling these, this is for chatting only info) that the rich people put on their SUV's |

If your in the boonies the best antenna is the crank up unit that looks like a TV antenna. You see then on Airstreams at times. The hassle with tiny antennas that waste juice amplifying is they boost Everything. Hash, snow ,reflections , ham noise, anything they recieve is pumped into the TV , which has a hard time rejecting & filtering out high powered junk. In our experience the bigger TV 's have poorer tuners than the 13 inch portable units. No mfg seems to expext a 30 inch flat $creen NOT to have satelite or, ugh, cable as feed. The small color portables have pretty good tuners and have remote controll , with a good directional antenna the biased network trash will be recieveable. We have found the best use of TV is for local weather , and at local election time some very funny home made local commercials. A sat dish is really needed for entertainment. FAST FRED |

How many little white lies does one have to tell to get the networks on your dish? I can get them at the house but where the bus MAY be I wouldn't. |

All you have to do is tell them you full time RV'ers and they will give the local net works and you can get east and west coast feeds. I ahve had them for about six years and i put mine on vacation when I am hold for a long period of time and I have a cable connection. try it. Mike |

CD: Just an opinion, but I have used just about every mobile tv antenna ever put on the market and the Weingard gull wing is by far the best of the bunch. They come with an amplifier, and the range is good to about 30-35 miles, UHF and VHF. They are directional and they work best at least slightly elevated off the roof line. |

As usual, you all have the answers. I guess I worded my question, strangely but I think you understood what I was saying. The "fabulous deal" antenna was the RCA model, about 12"x12" square and only 2" deep, that is supposed to be Unidirectional and is attached to the corner or roof of your house. Funny, they say it works well..... Unless I did something wrong, it was a poor performer. The Weingard Gull Wing is the antenna that I found and was asking about. Sorry, my question about the antenna working while down on the roof was thoughts of RADIO reception while in route. I was aware that it is a directional antenna. The arm with its 360 degree adjustability has been in mind. Yes, we all tend to not want to put holes in our roofs, I guess its just the thought of cutting it up more, but I dont see any alternate after the RCA Ant failed to perform to expectations. LOL, I agree FF, the Satilite Dish is what I have used during travels and is the way to go, heavens forbid that expensive Cable. I look at the "Local" antenna for use as stated previously, radio reception and local channels but I also want to be able to use it as a backup during bad weather, esp when the Dish blanks out. If Hurricane "Gonna Git YOU" or an F5 tornado is coming, I WANNA KNOW! It just makes sense to have the alternate source of reception. Thanks for the response "Imagine" cd |
