I'm sure no one out there has ever heard of Gospel Echoes Prison Ministry, those little red address books given out on the "inside". Well, we have just taken possession of a '62 4106 with a 4spd. manual for our "on the road" ministry and I am asking about tranny gear oil. I have been told by 1 "reliable" source, that GM specs say 10 weight gear oil is required (new gears), yet a 2nd source says 80/90. Right now we are using "30", but I had to top up with some "40" engine oil just recently. (This was only on the advise of the bus's long-time maintenance mechanic) What say you all? (Since adding the "40" [just 2 qts.] it has been occasionally locking in 4th; seems to depend on my pace of shifting tho'.)

The book says use the same as the engine which in your case should be 40 weight, I also would use an additive like LUCAS.>>>Dan 4106-1261

When Da Book was written 30 wt was the recomendation for the engine , 40 works fine , but is slower shifting for the first 15 min of driving.

A quart or two of Synthetic oil will help the 40 oil , and protect the gear teeth as you learn to shift silently..

Works for me,

By all means splurge and go with the synthetic. Synthetic lubricants have so many advantages over fossil lubricants.

Be sure to drain out all of the old oil before putting in the new.

Get the oil warm first by driving on the highway for an hour or two and drain it while it's hot. Leave the plug out and let it drain overnight if you have the time.
