Ok thought I ask. Besides the oil change , oil filter and fuel filters. What would a tune-up on a DD8v71 consist of ? Or when do you adjust the valves and check the injectors ? What would you do if plaining a trip with your bus knowing the motor has a lot of miles ? |

Get someone very familiar with DD to give it a listen. Many problems can be heard by a good experienced ear. Most coaches run better after the first 1000 miles from a long sit , and even better on the next 1000. Let her rip , but watch the temp gage if you havent flushed and refilled the coolant with real diesel antifreez and dist water. 200 F is the point to let it cool, 210 has broken many a cylinder head. grease job....drain air tanks......check trans. fluid...air pressure in tires...check air cleaner..take it on a trial run....50 to 100 miles...inspect it...all other stuff should be done by a professional ,if it needs to be done.. |

Brakes. If you need info on checking the brakes, I suggest you ask in new posting. As far as the engine, I was told by a bus shop that the injectors should be changed every 100,000 miles and the rack adjusted (must adjust rack when you replace injectors). But then I was told by a bus owner like me that was a luxury. Where are you and where ya goin? Joe 4106-2119 |

Check the seals. One of the seals on my 8V71 engine, probably at the generator, let go and the engine was shut down by the low oil sensor. When I started it up again after adding 10 quarts of oil one of the cylinders was probably still full of diesel and the cranking broke the rod or something and wrecked the engine. I drove it from Wilkes Barre PA to Berlin NJ on 7 cylinders adding about 4 quarts of oil every hour or so. So I decided that a 40 year old engine was going to be too unreliable and ordered a rebuilt one through Luke and US Coach Repair. John Root PD4106 1638 Rocinante |
