good luck

What you are saying is that it will start and run as long as the start switch is held down?

If so, check your oil pressure.

No green light and when it stopped running last time I had a bad white smoke episode.. This Honda is a p o s. It is propane with no more than 140 hours. It has expensive oil in it and it looks to be enough. There seems to be a little moisture in the oil but I attribute that to condensation.

I think George's intent was the wider oil pressure topic... how about the oil pressure switch that keeps it running?

Part of the engine protection system for the little beast.

happy coaching!

Well, I hope this does not cost me my Mr. Wizard title (or mean I have to return the magic decoder ring), but Hondas of this type are not my strong suit.

Really two possibilities here. One would be the control board, as Clifford suggests. AFAIK, there's not much you can do with those except replace them. The other would be one of the safety switches, and those can be tested.

In addition to the oil pressure switch mentioned by George, which should read Open at rest and Closed with maybe 5-10 PSI on it, there is likely a temperature switch as well. This switch should read Closed at rest and should Open at maybe 220-240 or so.

Check the two switches, and if they are good (and have good wires back to the control module), then it is probably a board problem. That said, it wouldn't hurt to throw a mechanical oil pressure gauge on the unit and make sure you really have pressure while it is cranking.

My honda (5.5hp) air compressor did something similar to this once, it was the oil* switch/sending unit.

Manuals with a troubleshooting guide can be downloaded here: http://engines.honda.com/models/

* Honda calls it an "Oil Alert" switch

Hi I have had a 6010 honda now for seven years. Due to high hours and several failures I replaced my 6010 but I will say though I really don't care for them it was a good reliable generator. The fact that the generator will not continue to run when the switch is released can be a result of several factors. Some have already been mentioned, oil pressure switch and over temperature switch. The key here is that the green light never lights. This indicates the generator has no output so it will not continue to run. The cause can be as costly as the rotary fields or stator windings or could simply be a bad connection. The first thing to look at is the slip ring brushes to make sure they are making connection. From there you would need to see if the regulator is applying field voltage to the brushes. There really are some simple trouble shooting techniques that can quickly let you know what is wrong. If you would like help with the trouble shooting process feel free to e mail me and I will get you my phone number. Best of luck. Tim

Interestingly humorous in an ironic metaphysical sense Sean...
the restocking charge for returning a Decoder Ring
is your Mr. Wizard title & your net worth..!
(it's in Da Rule Book)

Looks like you are stuck with all three
for the remainder of the trip,
there will be someone at the door
inside The Terminal when it is over
to collect all 3,
in return you will receive
"True Enlightenment", comfort & a set of Back Flappers
to propel yourself around "THE BIG Campground".

I HAVE BEEN ON THE PHONE WITH A WONDERFUL GENT AT pinellis power products. he had me watch 4 videos about this and also had me sand down the rings for a better connection. i have a voltage drop from 3.3 at the plug to 1.3 at the brushes. we are going to make some jumpers tonight and bypass the regulator.

We got the engine to run by removing the regulator and hot wording the brushes, but we still don't have proper voltages.

"hot wording the brushes"

Thomas,
if you used any that I haven't
(while mashing a thumb with a hammer for instance)
OR
if you were able to formulate some new ones,
I am sure we ALL would appreciate a list of them....!

The "Carlin 10" have So many miles on them that they have become nearly worthless\meaningless in such situations...
Some 21st Century words would be a welcome addition to my
"lexicon of angry utterances" that suddenly cause broken things to become useful & functional again & provide relief in times of frustration and/or indescribable pain

hot wiring the brushes. as we have no Resistance between any of the wires to ground except the yellow it is a sign the stator which is ยข916. i think i will get a cheap Chinese diesel unit instead.

Sorry to hear that it is a bad stator. That's about the worst possible outcome, besides a bricked engine.

Since the engine is running well, you might try to find a working generator head. Probably cheaper than an entire set.

You might even find an identical set with a bad engine from which you can salvage the head.

This is why I had Dick Wright build me a 12kw with all mechanical solenoids with a simple voltage regulator for the generator end. My Powertech 10kw is built the same way. Granted I have only 1,000hrs on it, but all 100% trouble free. Good Luck, TomC

There is a fellow on Edmonton Kijiji that has been trying to sell a 6010 for parts for a long time.
