I just bought a 1970 4905 and the trany broke in half on the way home. had it replaced in bowling green ky at a kenworth dealer. BIG mistake. $1200 labor.twice what they quoted me. the new trany grinds going into gear. grinds while shifting both up and down. is there a clutch or trany brake that needs adjusting? it's a spicer 4 speed vk7145. Thanks in advance |

will try to make it short note....when you are in low gear ,winding out, ready to shift, put the clutch in pull it into neutral ,let the clutch out,put the clutch back in,pull it into second...it sounds harder than it really is ...it just becomes habit...easy after a day of playing around on a deserted highway...all gears that is what you do...tell me if you understand,or want more info. |

1. I'm in first gear. 2a. let of accelorator. 2b. Push in clutch. 3. Shift out of first, but stop before going into second. 4. let out on clutch and put clutch back down quickly. 5. Move shifter to second. On mine, each gear has a little different rythm. One gear, I may double clutch quickly, not really bring my foot even all the way up before going back down and finishing the shift. Going to 4th is a slower smoother action to shift with out a grind. The idea, so Iv'e been told, is to get the gears moving at the same speed for the the next gears to match up. Going up hill and need to down shift? I'm in 4th, going up hill, get down to 55 MPH. 1a. let off the accelerator. 1b. push in the clutch 2. take out of 4th gear 3. let out the clutch 4. rev up the engine to what I have learned through experimation in the right rpm's 5a. let off the accelorator 6b. push in the clutch 7 shift down to 3rd 8. floor it or I'll soon be doing the same thing to go down to 2nd. It actually is a fun challenge to learn just the right moves to make your baby happy. I have a 10 year old that learned to shift as I clutch. It's a beautiful rythm. phil |

ya' "KINDA" got the idea...it's all timeing...for right now..you need to learn by yourself...no helping hands...on the downshift...it sounds silly...but the noise your engine is makeing in third ready to go into 4th....make THAT noise when you are downshifting...kinda hum & make the engine match your hum.....something that needs to be done alone...people will be laughing at you if you have company...where are you, what state ? |

The article on shifting is very good. These transmissions don't have any synchronizers so they will grind unless you double clutch. Important things to remember are to find out how fast you are going at the top end of 1st 2nd and 3rd gears. Then when you are slowing down you get a couple miles per hour below these speeds and that is the time that you shift down. Don't hurry on your shifts and things will work out pretty good. In fact after a while it will be possible to shift when you are not at a shift point because you didn't have time to down shift, steer, signal and whatever else at an intersection. Read the article and then go out and have some fun learning. |

My buddy (a professional) taught me how to shift in a 62 fishbowl suburban (about two years ago). Tough at first, then alot of fun. |

Ron; Try counting ONE - TWO as you shift. ONE as you clutch/shift into neutral, and TWO as you clutch/shift into the desired up-gear. Once you adjust your one-two pace for one noiseless shift, all the rest will fall into place. Holding the shifter and feeling the engine vibration will give you a better feel of the engine speed for the downshifts also. Never force the shift; It will either slide in or it won't. |
