Hello folks, well I went to make a shart turn and my power steering just stops. Oil leaking all over the back end so figure a hose blew but can't seem to find a bad spot in any. Want to fill it up and then see if I can find the bad hose. Book says 10W SEA oil, so can I use 10W30 to fill it up so I can find the leak? Or do I have to try and find some 10W oil which is hard to find in my area. Thanks for your help |

I bet in a pinch you can use type A automatic transmission fluid. Not type F. When my Victors 42 pump blew up, the noise was incredible. Also the actual pump was way too hot to touch. Good luck. |

Do you mean SAE 10w, (not SEA)? You can use motor oils like SAE 10w-30 or 10w40, but according to my RTS book do not use Dexron oils in the power steering system. |

My 4104 DOES have Dexron in it. I would check the fluid all over the back & see if it is engine oil or red transmission fluid, then add the correct fluid. |

if you have a power steering pump that is mounted sos that if you blow the seal on the pumpit leaks into the crank case oil and if you are using tranny fluid of any type the amount of oil that you have in the steering system will ruin the engine real quick.rember the good old day when we would put a qt. of tranny fluid in a dirty engine and run it for 2 min. and then drain it , sure cleaned out every thing and if it ran for 5 min it was not nice.having said that the advise using the same oil that you have in the engine or a lighter grade of the same type , some people run with 10 weight non detergent and it works great. i have ran that for the last 5 years on my 4104 and no problems. |

I'm not sure what bus or power steering system you have. I had the factory Vickers (some call it Saginaw) system in my 4106 rebuilt at BAB Hydraulics. Bill told me to use Dexron in the Vickers (Saginaw) systems. I haven't talked to them in a while, but they used to be very good about giving advice. Their web site is BAB Hydraulics Regards, Daris |

i lost my PS last summer and the leak was the pump. was told the pump was junk but then my mechanic said the pump was fin & that i had just lost an o-ring. leak was out of a port on top that had a plunger held in by a roll-pin. if that's where yours is leaking, all you need to do is replace the o-ring on the plunger. i was later told the port was for a pressure relf valve but . . . |

Eureka. I only had a blown hose on the front side of the quick release position (MCI-8). Never did figure out how the quick release worked just took it apart the old fashion way. Replaced both high side hoses and then put in some Hydrolic/transmission 10 weight oil that I got from the parts store in a 5 gal bucket, took about 2 1/2 gal to flush and fill. Removed the return to the fill pot, took the old line and cut off one end and put a bolt in the end of the hose, and then flushed out the old oil, then while the pot was empty put the line back and refilled the pot. Never did see any air bubbles in the line since I flushed the line out. Dang it sure is fun to work on bus, Had wife and her sister both out working on it. By the way if you don't have enough air in the system when you go to shut off the motor it won't shut off till the air pressure builds up, BUMMER. But ya live and learn. |
