Hello. I mentioned in my post re: fuel that I'd just returned after 7 weeks on the road. I still have a couple of weeks worth of shows left to go before I get some real time off. I wanted to say a couple of things: 1. I spent a lot of time a couple of weeks ago (while hooked up to a cable modem for a few days) perusing a couple of bus boards, and this board is by far the best in terms of how it functions (even on a slow connection). 2. I wanted to thank those of you who have written me either on the board or privately regarding my questions. 3. I also wanted to thank those of you who commented about the story I posted "The Bus is a Vehicle." I appreciate you taking the time to express your thoughts to me about that story. I edited that essay and used it as my weekly newspaper column last week, and it also went out to about 2,500 folks via email as well. The main thing that has impressed me about the interaction with you folks is that, like the essay talked about, I have gained some friendships through this board. I've now gotten some future pot-of-coffee dates when my travels take me to different places, and I look forward to those meetings more than you might imagine. I have no doubt they will always come at a good time. One of the drawbacks of the work I do (concert touring) is that it can be quite lonesome because you're never anywhere long enough to establish any relationship with anyone. One way I have solved this is by participating here. I like the characters I see emerging on this board, and in my mind's eye I can imagine the whole gang sitting around a round table in a diner somewhere. There is a spark and a fire to this group, and I appreciate that. I like that it seems there can be disagreement without animosity, though sometimes the disagreement tends to cause the thread to never address someone's original question -- but that is perhaps the nature of not only the medium but that of human beings as well. Also a special thank you to Ian for making this possible. I have been the admin of bulletin boards before and it can be a pain in the neck even when everything works the way it should, so hat's off to you, sir. All that to say, thank you for the lifeline of being able to be in touch with you folks, and look forward to meeting some of you as time goes by. In "The Bus is a Vehicle" essay, I said that friendship was the fuel required by the engine of living. Thanks for putting gas in this man's tank. Sincerely, David Clark Cochran, Ga. |
