I've been trying to learn about coaches, hoping to buy one to convert before I assume room temperature. On the internet, I found a 1986 MCI96A3 with a 6V92T with inframe 106,000 miles ago & Eaton 5 speed with new clutch, Alcoa wheels. It's been used for charter work. Asking $22,000, located 490 miles from me.

Also a 1987 963 with 8v92, 5 speed, from original owner, doing charters. Asking $25,000, about 1200 miles away.

From the photos I've seen, both look clean. Do either of these sound feasible? What's a fair offering price? Any cautions? Thanks in advance for any advice.

they"sound" o.k.------ maybe a little high----you can tell alot by looking at them....you don't have to be a full fleged mechanic...look for rust...wires 'hanging'....have you seen that TOBY KEITH bus...elsewhere on the "internet"...won't say where ,but it "looks like it's worth 15,000..and LOTS has already been done...you would want to remove the 6 bunk beds,I imagine...I think you know where I'm talking about...I'm just trying to keep people from getting upset with me..

I would also recommend giving Luke at US Coach a call as I think he has several MCI's in the range you are looking for and I know he will have gone over them with a fine tooth comb

yep....Luke is good IF you are in the N.E. if he tells you it's a good engine...(etc) it will be...I looked at you address & it doesn't say where you live...If you 'like' buses now...You'll LOVE them after you get one...

something else to think about...if somebody wants 25,000 for something...you can usually get it for 20 or 21 green cash....lay it out on the table....makes grown men cry....

Thanks for the info, Two Dogs. I am in NE, but that's the state, not the region. If you would have a phone no. for US Coach, it would be appreciated.

Jay -

Luke's toll-free number at US Coach is 1-888-262-2434. Suggest you commit it to memory - it will be well worth it!

Do you really want a coach with a stick shift? 99.9% of conversions nowdays are automatics. Pros and cons to both, only you can decide what's right for you - regardless of what Johnny and Two Dogs say!! (J/K guys. . . LOL)

But if you eventually want a coach with an automatic, and think swapping out a stick for one later is a good idea, then you'd be better off searching for a coach equipped with one from the factory. The initially higher cost of one with an auto will be far less than buying a more inexpensive stick and converting it.

If you're looking at the "A" series from MCI, watch for one of the 102s. They're six inches wider than the 96s, which does make a difference inside. The track is also wider, so they're more stable in the turns, too.

Finally, look for one with the power door. The original "A" series had the most poorly-designed manual door opening mechanism ever conceived by transportation engineers - you'd either scrape your knuckles on the floor trying to get it closed, or the darned thing could make you a eunuch very quickly if a gust of wind caught the door while you were standing near the handle. Search for a model with the power mechanism. . .
