I have seen big rigs flash their marker lights as a signal for this or that. Some time ago I saw an article somewhere with a diagram, etc. for a switch that would flash these lights regardless of if they were on or not. Turned them off if they were on or turned them on if they were off. Does anyone out there have such a switch? Is there an available wiring diagram somewhere? I'd like to see it. Please.

comes standard in our prevost. Mounted inside the turn signal switch as a button on the very end!

Never knew it was there until a friend told me!

Works great!

If all else fails, you could call prevost and they will fax you a schematic of just THAT section free of charge!

Oh, hey.. That schematic was more for the headlights, not the
marker lights. Most truckers use either their 4-way flashers
or just flip the turn signal to the opposite side for a couple
flashes to "say thanks", rather than blink all the markers these
days.

Hello

Many truckers are having to use the hazards or turn signals because they CAN'T flash the clearance lights. There are a growing number of trucks that have an automotive style twist switch for the lights, same as your car. You'd have to turn out all the lights to get the tail and clearance lights to go out.

Dale, do you still have your stock dash set-up?
You have a seperate switch for the clearance lights. It is often cross wired with the headlight toggle, so everything comes on with the headlight switch.

I have to wonder whether they were crossed for those "coach drivers" who weren't bright enough to turn on both switches when its dark out... or it might be due to some little quirk in the wording of the federal motor vehicle safety standards to which the bus had to be built. I have been in some stock buses of that vintage that were controlable and some that weren't.

I have previously reviewed the schematic, and it appears that the two circuits are independant and that a jumper has been added somewhere between the circuits, giving the headlight circuit the power to overrule the clearance lights. By locating and removing the jumper you should be able to completely control the clearance lights from the appropriate switch. However, I have not reached this item on my own "to do" list, so can offer no practical assistance.

The circuits might be jumped at the switches, in the terminal block, ahead of or beyond the relays... and whether the manufacturer installed it or the fleet that ran it, I don't know.

Have you noticed most of the newer trailers that are being pulled up and down the road don't even have marker lights. Most all are now using the "D.O.T. tape".

Hey Matt,

I guess I should have said manufacturers have cut back on the amount of marker lights installed on some newer trailers. Thus allowing the use of the D.O.T. tape. Also see the link below.

My '76 Prevost has a 3 position switch for headlights and markers.
The switch is labled Marker Lights, Off, Headlights. In the marker position, the marker and tail lights are on, in the Headlight position, all lights are on. The conversion was done professionally but I think that switch is original.

Probably the former. We have a 1998 Blue Bird TranShuttle at work, & it has a rocker switch (a GM switch, identical to the one in my 1986 Caprice) for the headlights, taillights, & front parking lights, with a separate on/off switch for the clearance lights.
